Ford F-150 Lightning Self-propelled trailers are coming 1773937585743-vc

Quote:

"The AI-THt is designed to integrate a battery system rated up to 100 kWh, along with a self-assist propulsion concept that allows the trailer to assist in moving its own mass. The goal is to reduce towing strain and range anxiety — two persistent challenges when pairing heavy trailers with electric vehicles.
At this stage, the revised AI-THt remains a design concept presented through renderings. Even so, with reservations now open at $148,000 for a planned 2026 delivery, the project is more than just a vision."

There's another company that put them on the market last year. Pretty nice rigs from what I see.

But again, it's not the size or mass of the trailer that cuts the range in half. Its the shape/drag created by the trailer. I have a 1k lb open utility trailer that cuts my range in half. But I don't have to go far so it's never an issue for my Lightning.

Exactly, I have a 20/27 ft trailmanor trailer and my range only drops to about 1.7 miles per kw when towing it due to the fact that it folds down. It's a great travel trailer for towing due to that (plus I love that it can fit into my garage)

That’s something I don’t get about this forum, why would it not show you some posts? I sometimes see people respond to posts that I didn’t see in the thread 🧵

Could be either deleted, pruned, or mod removed posts. Also, not sure if you 'ignore' a particular user, their posts may not show up on your view.

Back on topic, I've been eyeing a Pebble for a possible retirement present to myself if they are still around in 20 years :p

One could stay a nice hotel every day for year to a year and half for 150K, no need to charge, insure, tow, clean, repair .., I guess I'm missing the point! :)

PS you do still need to register ... LOL

One could stay in a hotel for sure for less money but of course the travel trailer will retain some residual value where the rental of a hotel room is totally gone.

In addition to the tractive capability of these EV RVs which are meant to extend the range of an EV tow vehicle they are also quite useful for "boon docking". This is the action of setting up camp in an area with no services, and of course, no hotels. You might compare the prices of these new offerings to something more traditional like the Airstream TradeWind, another boon docking focused travel trailer. You'll find that it also gets up in the $150k range quite quickly and has no traction motors of any kind.

Here’s the latest I’ve found. Due to go into production later in 2026 and make deliveries winter of 2026 or spring of 2027.

The entry level is almost affordable to us mere mortals.

Don’t tell my wife, but we have a reservation for the $120k version.

Expensive and silly. Silly expensive? Whatever, I highly doubt anyone I know or have ever heard of will purchase one. These are Bezos and Gates private equity-type pipe dreams that keep the rest of us from being grounded in common sense. Throwing a popup in the bed with all the bells and whistles would not only be more reasonable but wouldn’t affect the range as much. If you need something that big, that implies you either are moving around with enough occupants to justify the space or you’re a retiree moving about the country with spouse and an array of domestic animals. Neither situation justifies the cost which is double or triple what a similar sized regular bumper pull or fifth wheel would be. Hotels and Airbnb during this economy will always be more reasonable.

On another note, to me these have so much more of a South Park “smug alert” vibe than being a good functional idea that wouldnt be anymore practical than owning a yacht. So a cool idea that has no real practicality.
