Tesla Chargers Not working for Lightning

At the new Tesla chargers in Portsmouth, NH you need to use the Tesla app to unlock the cable from the charger, but Plug and Charge worked otherwise.

Was quite a surprise, as had been a Tesla owner since 2019 before switching to Lightning this year, and I've never seen the cords locked in before.

I rarely charge out in the wild and just stick with plug and charge as I don't need or want another app.

I use this when planning a massive trip. I just prefer the visual without needing a planning apps suggested stops or maps with every DC charging brand.

You just happened to go to a site that is compatible without using that app. That doesn't mean you can show up to any Tesla site with your adapter and expect it to work. Blind squirrel found a nut. You have to use the app to make sure that the site is available for use with non-Tesla vehicles.

Not all Tesla Superchargers are open to Ford vehicles. When you check FordPass, note that the Eloy station is noted as not compatible.

This will also be reflected in the Public Charging app on the touchscreen.

For more on how to find compatible chargers, check out ford.com/fastchargingadapter or scan the QR code inside the box your Ford adapter came in, or on the pamphlet inside the box the Ford adapter came in.

Sounds like your Ford account isn't set up for plug and charge, did you use the Tesla app?

Just an anecdote. I got super frustrated last week trying to charge at a bank of chargers that appeared to be available. Used the Tesla App, picked the stall (4a I believe), failed, failed again. Looked over my shoulder to see another bank of stalls30 ft away with the same numbering scheme. Yep, they worked just as advertised. I could complain about the signage or the app, but really, I'm the doofus here.

Because they might be V2 chargers which are never available AFAIK or V3+ chargers that haven't been upgraded to be available to non-Tesla vehicles.

You MUST use the Tesla/Ford app to find superchargers that are available to non-Tesla vehicles.

Which app do I need, there are several? One is like maps, one is Tesla membership,…. I’m a bit confused, so any help is appreciated.

Same for iPhone, it's called Tesla, same icon as above. You may be seeing non-Tesla apps and getting confused.

The FordPass app can search for all chargers on the lBlue Oval Charge Network including Tesla.

It's all you need for DC fast charging.

It covers slow chargers (L2) too, but might not be as complete as plugshare, etc..

By that, do you mean that if type Tesla in the search bar on either Android play store or the iOS App Store, that you do not see the Tesla app listed that I enclosed with the red box in my screen capture?
Note that although the screen capture was from my Android, I get the same thing on my #$%^& iPhone.

It's all you need for DC fast charging.

Yes, you can find the SuperCharger locations from the FordPass app, and you will be able to charge with nothing else - just plug in the cable and adapter and it will charge. However if you are going to use SuperChargers very often you will want to buy a Tesla membership so you pay quite a bit less. To charge with membership prices, you MUST use the Tesla app.

The red box was added by @K6CCC after the fact for clarity. If you have an iPhone, go to App Store and search Tesla, it is literally the first result after the always present ad.

If you still don't see it I respectively suggest you get a grandkid to help you. My kids have already been forewarned that they will be explaining technology to me someday.
