I have been trying to tell people the Lightning is a forever vehicle. A good example of what I’m talking is this Tesla that was driven 1.2 million miles . If a Tesla Model S can do it there’s no reason to believe our Lightnings don’t have a million plus miles in them.

The article says that the Model S has had three battery packs. So that means the battery packs lasted an average of 400,000 miles each. Tell that to next anti-EV’r that says you’re going to have to replace the battery pack as soon as the warranty expires.

The owner of the Model S did have to replace the rear motor thirteen times but according to the article there was a known issue with the early Model S motors. Only time will tell if Ford learned from Tesla’s mistake and put motors on the Lightning that will last.

I wouldn't live long enough to put that many miles on a single vehicle, since I spread my driving across multiple cars/trucks.
But I do fully expect my EV to be the one least worrysome if/when it's a high mileage vehicle. On paper they certainly have advantages regarding.
Hope it pans out to be true.

would love to be able to talk about this story, but the headline belies a lot of issues. 3 battery packs sounds interesting but 14 motors? Huh? and nothing about the total cost of ownership. I won't be discussing this with anyone.

Doesn’t really prove much in my opinion.

This doesn't read as a good thing to me... You talk about sharing with an anti-EV individual, but this seems to almost prove their points.

I don't know. 400K miles per battery sounds pretty good. OTOH, driving over 130K miles per year sounds like something none of us will ever do. That's like spending you whole life behind the wheel.

I had a 1994 GMC Sonoma that had to have two crankshaft and five starters replaced before the extended warranty ran out. Cost of ownership is highly dependent on the vehicle and how the vehicle is treated. Not having to change engine oil, transmission fluid, etc. are also avoided costs with an EV that can really add up over time.

If we are going to talk about the cost of ownership we need to talk about the elephant in the room, social costs. Some people may think of social costs as imaginary costs but they are quickly becoming real in the way of CARB and CAFE penalties. We can also expect a direct impact of social cost adjustments on fuels such as with the loss of oil subsidies.

The governments will continue to make it more expensive to own and operate ICE vehicles. Most governments have a goal of completely eliminating ICE vehicles from our roads by 2050. At least with an EV our costs of ownership won’t be constantly increasing like they will be with an ICE.

I'd like to know how the driver found the time to bring his vehicle into the dealer 13 times, for what I can only imagine was for a minimum of a week each time to have the work done on the motor and battery.

Would be nice to know how long the motor lasts after they figured out what kept making it go bad. 300k-400k miles on a battery seems pretty achievable. I've seen lots of studies that show battery health degradation levels off in the 85-90% range.

Not to mention the cost of CO on the environment, something that's getting easier to see every day

If you get to choose the highest mileage EV with 3 battery replacements and extrapolate the performance to all EVs, then it's only fair that ICE owners get to do the same. https://www.everlance.com/blog/10-highest-mileage-vehicles
There is no denying that there are plenty of ICE vehicles with over a million miles, there are even ICE F150s out there with over a million miles. But it’s also important to note that many ICE vehicles with that many miles weren’t taken very good care of and created a LOT of air pollution over years. I would be very happy to see most of ICE vehicles recycled before they become massive polluters and made into EVs for the sake of future generations.
