Greetings!! I recently installed a new 240v/60amp circuit for a new Tesla Universal Wall charger so I can Level 2 charge both my new Tesla Model Y and my F-150 Lightning at the full 48amp speed.

The Tesla side works perfectly.

The F-150 side (where I connect using the included J1772 adapter) seems to always through an error. Shortly after connecting, I get an error on my phone that there's a fault in the connection, "remove and restart the session". However, before I can even respond the session actually continues by itself and finishes up normally!! No actual errors are shown on the app itself or in the F-150.

I have not seen that error with my old Level 1 (220v) charge system on the F-150.

Since the session actually continues by itself, and nothing seems out of line, I'm assuming that's it's just a minor glitch of some kind.

Anyone else have a similar issue? Suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried configuring it for Compatibility Mode? I don't know if it will solve your issue, but it sounds like it might be what you want.

  • Compatibility Mode: This option allows Wall Connector to be compatible with older generation vehicles. Use it only if you experience faults with your Wall Connector and your electric vehicle. Note that you will lose some software functionality in utilizing this mode.

I have a Tesla UWC and will frequently get the charge fault on initial plug in. This is a known behavior. As long as it automatically clears itself, I do not worry too much about it. I have not implemented compatibility mode myself. So far I don’t feel it is necessary. I have daisy chained a Gen 3 wall connector off the UWC and dedicate the Gen 3 to my 2022 Model Y and the UWC is dedicated to the Lightning.

I have the UWC and have never had the error, FWIW. Are there any software updates available?

I have a UWC and only get the error now and then. I have compatibility mode turned on. I was under the impression that the UWC wouldn't charge non Teslas unless compatibility mode was enabled.

I do have to say that with non Teslas the Tesla app doesn't give you near as much information as I would like. The charge rate in the Tesla app won't show when I am charging the Lightning, etc...

I can see the charge rate for the Lightning in the Tesla app by swiping left on my car image at the top of the screen. This then shows the Tesla Home Screen where I can see the status and charge rate for both my UWC and Gen 3 wall chargers

I have been receiving the "Charging Error" message for about 10 months. If the truck sits for 1 hour+ before I plug it in I get the "Charging Error" message but it always charges. If I plug in immediately after driving I never get the "Charging Error" message. The truck still charges so I don't really care.

I believe the difference with compatibility mode is it doesn't attempt to try the 'Tesla' handshake first before falling back to J1772.

Have the UWC and compatibility mode enabled. Used to get it once every 3-4 months, then once a month and now once every other week. Always charges and never gives any problems (other than app warning) plus it is a known issue as others have mentioned.

No updates ... I just installed it a few weeks ago and during that process it installed the latest update.

Sounds like this is really no big deal, which is what I surmised. I must say the actual charging works otherwise flawlessly!!

I believe the "fault" may be in the adapter itself. I got a low coast NACS -> J1772 adapter on Amazon (one that is specific for the wall and destination chargers ... not Superchargers!!) and tried a charge session. Works perfectly and no errors from the Ford app. I'll keep that one in the truck in case I ever have a need and continue to use the adapter that came with my Wall Charger for day-to-day usage.

Not sure this is even worth a call to Tesla to complain about their adapter!! If it works, it's fine with me!!

Thanks for the info!!

IIRC, Compatibility mode is for pre-J1772 Teslas.

On the UWC its for when you experience issues in normal mode with non-Teslas as well.

Compatibility Mode: This option allows Wall Connector to be compatible with older generation vehicles. Use it only if you experience faults with your Wall Connector and your electric vehicle. Note that you will lose some software functionality in utilizing this mode.

J1772 is a standard. If both the vehicle and the EVSE use that standard, it works. The only possible reason for a “compatibility mode” is to accommodate non-J1772 vehicles.

You'll notice a Tesla wall connector does a few other things if plugged into a Tesla, like getting the name/vin/model/color of the car and displaying it in the app when its plugged into said EVSE.

This is not standard.. the tesla chargers attempt their own handshake first, and fall back to J1772.. Compatibility mode skips that first step because some cars can't handle that delay.
