Updated 2/15/23 with statement from Ford:

“During a standard Lightning pre-delivery quality inspection, one vehicle displayed a battery issue. We believe we have identified the root cause of this issue. By the end of next week, we expect to conclude our investigation and apply what we learn to the truck’s battery production process; this could take a few weeks. We will continue holding already-produced vehicles while we work through engineering and process updates.”
“We are not aware of any incidents of this issue in the field and do not believe F-150 Lightnings already in customers’ hands are affected by this issue.”
“We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available,” Ford said.

Ford halts production and shipments of its electric F-150 Lightning due to potential battery issue

PUBLISHED TUE, FEB 14 202312:29 PM EST
  • Ford Motor has paused production and shipments of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup due to a potential battery issue.
  • The EV truck is being closely watched by investors, as it’s the first mainstream electric pickup on the market and a major launch for Ford.
  • The production halt adds to ongoing “execution issues” detailed to investors earlier this month by Ford CEO Jim Farley.
DETROIT – Ford Motor
has paused production and shipments of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup due to a potential battery issue, the company said Tuesday.

Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg declined to disclose details of the possible battery issue, which is being investigated after a vehicle displayed a potential problem as part of the automaker’s pre-delivery quality inspections.

The stop-shipment order and halt in production was issued at the beginning of last week, according to Bergg. It adds to ongoing “execution issues” detailed to investors earlier this month by Ford CEO Jim Farley.

Ford has not established a timeline for when production and the shipments will resume, Bergg said.

“The team is diligently working on the root cause analysis,” Bergg said, adding the company is “doing the right thing by our customers” to resolve any potential issues before resuming production and shipments.

Bergg said the company is unaware of any incidents or issues associated with the potential battery issue. There is no stop-sale for vehicles already on dealer lots, meaning dealers can continue to sell vehicles they already have on hand.

The halt in production and shipments was first reported Tuesday by Motor Authority.

The F-150 Lightning is being closely watched by investors, as it’s the first mainstream electric pickup truck on the market and a major launch for Ford.

Automakers routinely have issues and recalls associated with vehicles but problems with batteries are of particular concern and interest, as the automakers invest billions of dollars in the vehicles.

One of the most notable issues has been with General Motors’
Chevrolet Bolt EVs. The Detroit automaker had to recall all of the vehicles built starting two years ago to address fire issues caused by “rare manufacturing defects” at facilities of its battery supplier LG Battery Solution.

Probably the same issue that has been noted with the forum members that have gotten emails from Ford already. Wait and see for us who already have our Lightnings

This does not bode well. It's one thing if a subset of community has battery issues or gets notified by Ford for work, but an entire stop build/ship order concerns me that many more trucks could be at risk. I sincerely hope my truck doesn't fail, my local dealership is not good (I bought one state over) and I'd be left commuting on the motorcycle every day.

Are you referring to those who have to constantly disconnect the 12v battery?

It would be nice to know whether this is for li-ion battery issues or lead acid battery issues. Anyone know?

Fairly confident it is related to the main powertrain lithium ion battery.

On the plus side I can stop blaming the transport company. The downside is my truck may be sitting for much longer than I anticipated before it ever gets to me. Better that they sort this out now I guess?

I doubt they'd fret so much over a 12v battery...my guess its the dead cells some people are seeing in the HVB.

I'd like to know if these are all SKI cells or if LG Chem supplied some of the production truck battery packs.

A question about this whole process. Let's say they have the stop build for a week. Will just the missed week get rescheduled to the first available unscheduled week, and everything else currently scheduled will still go as planned, or will Ford bump everything scheduled back one week? Just curious if everyone who has a current scheduled build will expect to be delayed.

In the past, trucks "left over" from the previous weeks production would be shifted into the next. I'd expect this to happen to some degree.
