Just did a trip from SE Michigan to Burlington, VT with the Lightning to get some skiing in. Got back late last night, need to wash the truck later today...

Summary:

- Tesla SuperCharger network adds capability in some areas that don't have EA, or much other CCS charging, like Burlington, VT. I was easily able to add chargers to my trip, using ABRP, that worked perfectly from a timing standpoint (665 mile drive, 3 chargers). That's not easy with EA many times.

- Tesla SuperChargers are faster than EA. I captured some data that I have to go through, but it was pretty clear. In Car Scanner, I show amps requested and delivered. With Tesla, they're usually within 2 amps. With EA, it's often 40amps apart.

- I am positive that preconditioning on the way to a DC fast charger (yes, set properly to an EA charger, and shows as a charger) does not work on my vehicles any longer.

- Tesla is sometimes cheaper than EA. On this trip, I had a choice - pay Tesla $12.99 or pay EA Canada $7.00. I paid Tesla, and charged roughly 9 or 10 times. Each charge was flawless.

- Those that say that Tesla doesn't have broken chargers are incorrect. Those that say that they are fixed quick, also incorrect. A week apart, still broken.

- Be very careful to read the Tesla station number before activating (if using the Tesla app). At one location, this is the order of stations - 1B, 1A, 1C, 1D, ... Yes, no rhyme or reason. I paid full rate for 10kW before realizing and stopping the charge.

- Charged at 4 different locations. All had the posts removed. None will be easy to charge with the Mach-E based on curb height. Have to have someone watch carefully when loaded up as I pull in. With the truck, I could nose between chargers and let the tires hit. Mach-E won't be so easy I don't think.

- For the most part, Tesla people either didn't care, or welcomed me, except for two at the London, ON location who didn't like me occupying two spots. Tough noogies. Lots of notice there, most other stops were empty or no one cared. In Williston, VT, a Cybertruck pulled in, and no one paid any attention to me... Driver bemoaned that he bought it out of state and soon has to write a sales tax check. He had no idea of his battery size, and I'll bet he can't drive for beans. I told him he needed some stainless appliance spray and he agreed.

- Even Tesla chargers operate at different speeds. Have to compile data.

- At the ski area, they have 2 chargers (4 adapters, split). All 4 days we were able to charge with no issue, and no shared chargers. Not free, but I'll take it.

Just curious... have you noticed slower charging with not being able to precondition prior to DCFC? Admittedly I have not done a lot of DCFC but I dont think I've ever preconditioned and I've always maxed out my charge rate in the 150kw to 170kw range. From my experience it seems like the need/benefit for precondition is fairly minimal in our trucks due to the seemingly good thermal management.

NOTE: Most of my DCFC has occurred between 20 and 40F.

Yes, absolutely. You can see the heat going to the battery, and then the speed increases.

What temps were you at and what rate did it throttle you down to?

Rough numbers:

Drove 1,754 miles
Used 992kWh (some of this is gross from a charger, not net to truck)
Math - 1.77 miles per kWh
Truck - 1.8 miles per kWh

Cost $324.24
Cost per mile = 18.5 cents

Equivalent 17mpg F-150 @ $3.25 per gallon would be 19.1 cents per gallon, total cost of $335.32.

Can't tell I drove 665 miles yesterday, can you?

Nice report!
I knew the Tesla SC had a better charge curve than EA !

I noticed the faster charge too.

I’ve made several trips to VT from PA to ski and bike ride. I’ve been amazed how bad the charging infrastructure has been up there. Adding the Tesla chargers is going to be huge for the future trips. And like you stated, the spacing works out really well.

While I do have CarScanner running on trips, I don't go in and analyze the data (I may at some point).

I can say, definitively, that when the truck hasn't preconditioned (and mine is not) before a DC fast charge stop, I witness the following:

- 8+kW being used by the heater, despite heat being off in the truck.
- Battery temp climbing (but it always does during fast charging).
- Charging speed ramping up while the battery warms up, but this is offset by the charging speed slowing as SOC increases. Someone looking at all the data could probably make a definitive statement.

This was also not at ridiculously cold temps. I'm talking battery temps in the 40s and 50s.

One example:

At 52 degrees, and 59% SOC, I got 107kW speed.
AT 69.8 degrees, and 70.5% SOC, it was up to 120.73kW.

As an EV owner of Bolt and F150 ive never fast charged before. The F150 is now a Lightning, so i will be fast charging for road trips. This kind of trip report gives me a good overview of what to expect. Thx!

weird… I have not dcfc’d a lot (maybe 7 or 8 times) but I’ve always gotten the 10 minute boost at 160 to 170kw on EA 350’s and then a solid 150. Same experience yesterday with Tesla. I think I only attempted to precondition one or two times and did not have car scanner on so did not monitor if it was actually occurring. (which it is crazy that their is no indicator for but that’s another topic)

My 22 Lariat ER hasn't preconditioned in at least a year, even though I use the Ford Nav app to try to get it too. And then have to figure out how to not drive in the circles it tries to make me go in. Still love the truck, but will love it more with the Tesla adapter for better fast charging on road trips!
