Swappable Solid-State Battery Demonstration
How can Donut Battery transform existing vehicles? In this episode, we built a swappable battery demonstrator to test exactly that. The result is a smaller, lighter pack with more capacity, faster charging, and simplified design. Even with this simple demonstrator, you can already start to see how much solid-state batteries could change everyday use cases like last-mile delivery, where range, uptime, and charging speed directly define how much work a vehicle can do in a day.

The more videos come out the more I don’t believe we will see this is in a car/truck anytime soon. Perhaps Verge will prove me wrong, but I have my doubts. It’s also concerning that energy density and safety claims have NOT been proven.

Furthermore, BYD is showing they can accomplish 10C charging speeds with their Blade2 LFP pack. All cars with blade 2, (which is being sold and is on the streets today) can charge from 0% to 97% in under 9 minutes. How? 1,000V+ charging architecture.

China is making automakers, especially domestic automakers here in the USA, look like fools.

Solid-state cells usually swell up to 20% during cycling, forcing pack engineers to build elaborate clamping systems that erase the cell-level gains. This independent VTT test evaluates the Donut Battery's swelling behaviour across charge and discharge cycles.

A pre-aged cell was cycled at 0.5C, 1C, and 2C at ambient temperature. It breathed approximately 4.4% per cycle regardless of C-rate, roughly a fifth of the swelling typical of other solid-state cells.

This means Donut Battery can be integrated into conventional pack designs without the specialised clamping systems solid-state chemistries usually require.

Again, CATL has made this somewhat irrelevant while using LFP to boot.

I live in a cold climate - for about half of each year it seems- and know a lot about LFP as I have built an on site solar power plant, now with 210kWh LFP battery ESS. It needs temp controls.
I also have Sodium packs - for outdoor use, due to their far greater tolerance to temperatures.
LFP doesn't excite me for automotive use in high and low temperatures. Sodium overcomes many temperature issues but is heavier, and wider voltage range. Has some other limitations, like cycle life.

When Solid State solves some if it's production problems - it's temperature tolerance will blow away the current state of the art. But at what price per kWh....yet to be seen.
That said, Donut will not provide us with a simple demonstration of volume vs weight and capacity. I find this disturbing and deliberate.
They claim high cycle life, but don't back it up with anything. Also concerning.
I will wait and see the evidence. not interested in the hype.
