Instead we were presented with something no one asked for… The whole concept of EREV is comical. Between maintaining what is effectively now two vehicles under one roof, to filling up an an EV with gas or Charging an ICE vehicle with electricity.

If anything they are doing a great job with the deception game so far....the Expedition Max is huge but the spacing between the vehicles is odd, a not to mention the odd angle of the photograph, the weirdly blurry yet long-range photograph. and other odd details meant to throw us off?

One of the things I was noticing in the picture in the above post was how much more the windshield slopes with the newer trucks. Presumably to improve aerodynamics.
And of course the first decades show single row seating - which lots of people say they want, but even when available, almost no one buys.

I'd sacrifice some of that massive rear seat room for an extra bit of length to the bed. The back seat is great as it is, don't get me wrong. I use it to haul in lieu of the bed many times. Seats are always folded up. The people in the back living the luxurious life, are usually my wife, mother-in-law or son. All smaller than me. When I'm back there, I feel like a king! I fit fine. I'm not huge, but 6'1" 200lbs fits very nicely!

There is a reason the F150 has been the best selling truck for decades. Not the smaller Ranger types. Guys prefer the larger truck.

It doesn't take a genius to realize the best selling electric truck will be a full size truck with 500 miles of range, with a battery that won't explode. Also, it needs to charge 90% in 10 minutes, and be reasonable priced.

Basically, Ford needs to make a contract with CATL and BYD to brîng this battery technology to their F150's. The tech currently exists. The tech is getting better each day. It's hard to make a contract on technology that gets outdated and better each year.

The EREV will serve it's purpose to introduce guys to the electric platform. There is no doubt guys will fall in love with the electric platform. Then, they will dream about how great it would be to have an all electric with the same capabilities and without the maintenance headaches of ICE.

It's interesting to watch the progress and transformation into the all EV transportation infrastructure.

China is currently kicking our butts. But, we are getting there slowly, too slowly.
Interesting comment. Which "Guys prefer the larger truck?" Everyone in this thread is giving anecdotal stories based on their experiences and needs as evidence why this new truck isn't suited to "the market," which is fine for an idle conversation, but we're only hearing from a segment of American customers. Ford builds vehicles for the world market so they need to be strategic about this.

The Maverick is a good size and it is popular in the USA and here in Canada but I couldn't tell you if it is sold anywhere else in the world, or where. Same with the F-150 and all the related big trucks: 250, 350, 450; super duty.... whatever. They do great in North America but not elsewhere.

It seems to me the Ranger is loved worldwide for its size and capabilities and its universality for the world market. It fits on most roads, it is capable off-road for less developed areas, it has a useable bed, good towing and it is ideally sized for carrying people.

I've just returned from a very small island in the Caribbean where mid-sized pickup trucks are everywhere. Mercedes X-Class, Nissan Frontier, Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux, VW Amarok, Subaru Baja.... they are all there. These trucks are punished and run into the ground. Despite various import fees, duties and other taxes that amount to 3x what a normal customer would pay at retail to buy one brand new, I saw brand spanking new Ford Ranger Raptors everywhere.

Maybe it was an error to begin with the "F-150" segment and perhaps this "Ranger" segment is where they should have started instead. Maybe it makes sense why they didn't choose the "Maverick" segment as well. Although it is very late and it seems crazy to the rest of us, I think the pivot makes sense.

Coming from an European suv the Lightning is delightfully large. I got two kids in their own seats, loads of stuff to transport at weekends to our cabins.

And much more space for out trips to the landfill. Don’t need to use our little trailer any more.

I have always parked at the outskirts of the parking lots, faster than hunting for a free spot near the doors anyways. Given that the outskirts of a lot is measured in 10th of meters rather than miles here in Europe.

And floating above the traffic, seeing far ahead gives a lot smoother ride.

Specifically, only hearing from a segment of American customers on a full size pickup forum. I'm unsurprised to hear that many people here scoff at the idea of a smaller pickup.

Too big is correct. The old ones hauled more and could tow as well, but way smaller. I'd have purchased a Ranger or Maverick if either of them were BEV.

The huge thing you overlook is now full crew cab pickup trucks are dual purpose and much more functional vehicles especially for families. I have 3 school age kids, but I want a truck and do use a truck for truck things. That said, I use it as a family hauler 100x more than I use it for truck things. Which is exactly why going to something as small as the Rivian is a non-starter much less all the way down to a compact truck like this. That said maybe the tide will turn since the birth rate is on a 40 year decline with no end in sight.... not good.

I will wager whatever you like that tow cap will be closer to half of 7500 than it will to 7500...
That would make it much more viable for more folks, it's just not feasible with a platform this small.

Seems like my old Ranger was 7500#. It's really a sweet spot because a cheap car hauler grosses out at 7500# though I've heard that they are occasionally overloaded ;)

At the risk of getting into the weeds here, I think you're talking about GCWR which is not the same as tow capacity... a 2000 Ranger 4wd 3L which is what you said (correct me if I am wrong) has a max tow capacity of just over 4000 lbs depending on cab size (regular/super) and manual/auto trans...

http://therangerstation.com/overlanding-and-off-road/ford-ranger-towing-capacity/#gsc.tab=0 about 3/5 of the way down the page.

It *does* appear to have a Gross Combined Weight Rating of about 7500, which *includes the weight of the truck*

Anyway, safe towing and have a good evening and pardon if I misunderstood your post :)

I think you are correct and I had occasionally been overloading the Ranger by a good bit. I seldome weighed my load until the '23 Powerboost.

This. A large number of open deck and enclosed trailers have 3500# axles - so 7k lb limit. 7500lb towing capacity is indeed a sweet spot.

I can also confirm that while my 2019 Ranger had plenty of power to tow my 8.5x20’ 7500lb enclosed trailer - it sucked at towing, not because of power, but because it was 3k lbs lighter than the trailer, had a narrow wheel base and a tiny fuel tank.
