So I made the mistake of resetting my EV driving history. Now when I use navigation the system never does the “recalculating for highway speeds” or whatever it said before, and gives me a driving distance way out of my actual miles I can drive on the highway. I assume it’s calculating using my city kwh per mile. To get to my next stop I’m forced to do 10 miles UNDER the speed limit (typically 60mph) on the interstate.
Any way to fix this or am I stuck just waiting for it to learn my driving habits?

The GOM is so wildly inaccurate on my Lariat ER, I wish I could just turn it off. I get much better estimates using the percentage charge left in the battery and my mi/kwh, then doing a little math in my head.

Use your State of Charge {SOC}, current efficiency i.e. 1.8 miles per kilowatt hour {MPK} and battery capacity to determine potential remaining range as the trip continues, leave a safe margin for intermediate charging stops, wash, rinse & repeat.

So many will tell you to ignore the GOM or use the SOC, efficiency, and capacity (I.e. do a lot of maths in your head on the fly), but the GOM is not so bad if you keep in mind a few things about it:

1) It is an estimate based on your driving history - it actually does all those calculations that some suggest you do in your head. But it cannot predict the future. If your trip is somewhat uphill, it will over estimate what remains, if downhill, you will have more surplus.

2) It places a higher weighting on your most recent driving history. Your efficiency during your last 10 miles is more significant than the 50 before that, which is more significant than the 200 before that.

So, use your GOM with this in mind and you'll do fine. Your cleared history will be replaced once you drive a bit. I speak from six and a half years of experience of driving a Focus Electric with its 100 mile range. ?

This is a great explanation. Do you mind if I ask your source of information?

Mainly from observation over the past six and a half years with the FFE plus our last few ICE vehicles, with a few bits and pieces from forums such as this and the FFE forum.

The most significant effect with the FFE was one day in its second winter when a bad snow storm hit mid-day. My winter range would be about 120 km (75 mi). My trip home from the office is about 25 km (15 mi) and would take about 20-30 minutes. That day took just over 2 hours on very slippery, foot-deep snow, slow moving roads with the heater keeping me warm for the journey.

Between the heater's operation and a lot of wheel-spinning, my SOC was under 10% when I reached home and when it charged to 100% overnight, the GOM claimed my range would be about 68 km!

That day was back to normal winter conditions and the GOM's relalculations had my range more or less increase as I drove, getting nearly the 120 km that would be usual for a day like that.

Yeah I hear you. It's not that the GoM is poorly designed or programmed, but rather that it's being asked to do a very difficult job in predicting what future driving conditions will be. I find that it's very hard to get people to stop thinking in terms of "how many miles do I have left" because the answer is always "it depends" A LOT on many factors.

Exactly why I don’t use the GOM.

True, since many don't have a good sense of their own abilities - how often are you held up by someone waiting for "enough space" to proceed when there's plenty of room?

GOMs were never the prefect predictor with ICE vehicles, but with EVs they can readjust more frequently and more noticeably for all sorts of factors. If you leave yourself about a 32 km (20 mi) buffer, you'll be fine.

This is a real gas gauge from say 62 years ago in a VW Bug. Notice it’s jewel-like presence. You were empty when the indicator dropped below “R”. But how far below R? Ah, grasshopper, you’ve got to earn that knowledge. Once upon time I drove 62 miles on “R” and completely emptied the tank but the carb float bowl had enough to get me uptown the next morning (it started!) and I put exactly 10 gallons in the tank to about midway on the fuel filler tube.

I haven't reset my driving history since I bought mine, 23k miles driven, it still messes up when I use built in Nav. I punched in a DCFC that I know I can make using 60% SOC +/- 5% pending wind. I had 85% charge and was not worried, but the nav wanted me to stop and charge on the way. I of course ignored and arrived as expected. More recently, I stopped putting in DCFC to the nav unless the temperature is at an extreme and I wait until I'm about 30-40 miles away.
