That might happen sooner than later in the people’s republic of California. Refineries keep closing. Gas keeps going up. I don’t live here but am working here. I just smile as I glide past the gas station and pull into work and plug into the free 80amp charger.

That is why CA has such a high proportion of alternative fuel vehicles - BEV, NG and H2 (coming soon).

I must say I am disappointed but I get it. I can't say as of now if this is the best decision moving forward for Ford. They have been chasing the shiny objects of late and while an EREV does make the most sense, that's what the Lightning should've been to begin with. Ford has done well to cement themselves as a follower of late vs the leader they once were.

I hope for the best moving forward and will continue to enjoy my Lightning as long as I have it. I'm very glad I leased it as I see them likely being difficult to move now that an EREV has been announced.

One thing they'll have to battle is folks who get an EREV may not charge it much and simply have the generator running more than it should. Some people just don't get things and I foresee lots of oil changes coming for those folks but, I'm sure dealers will be pleased.

I'll look at the new Lightning when my lease is up and see what it's all about but having to change the oil on an "electric" truck sucks. Maybe the 5.0 will still be around and I'll hop back into one.

Either way, I surely hope this is the best move for Ford. It's time for them to regain some consistency in business decisions and be more successful.

But add a tank full of gas and an ignition source to that same batter and that concern dissipates.

Correct. Everything I said still stands. Gonna be gas that’s converted to electric then used. The electric only range with no gas use to supplement is gonna be in the range I described.

In all honesty though in the town i grew up in, it feels warmer than it did in the 80’s…. However storms feel the same, ocean is just as cold (and no higher). But all that aside, IF we were cooling, then it would be a big problem. IF co2 levels were falling it would be a really big problem.

Right, I get that and technically I suppose the EREV is a form of PHEV. But right or wrong I draw a distinction between the two by what exactly is in the power delivery system.

Will be interesting to see the cost. The US market isn't there for a fully electric full size truck at present cost and I'd be surprised if an erev is going to be the answer. Ford really didn't give the lightning much of a chance from the beginning considering the poorly trained sales staff and slow as molasses update process. This just reaffirms the fact that China is going to eat everyone's lunch.

Ford should have focused on a 500 mile range battery for the Lightning. Also we need a battery that can't burn up and lasts 500,000 miles. I realize it's a nightmare for Ford to stay current with the latest battery technology. We are at China’s mercy these days for the best batteries. But once a 500 mile range battery is sold in a pickup, that's the plateau for range that will give electric truck manufacturers some breathing room.

EREV's are great for some customers and will solve the towing and range anxiety issues.

However, most customers only want pure electric. I could list a 100 advantages of pure electric over EREV's. When you drive/own an electric vehicle, you realize electric is the next step for all vehicles and ICE is going to be retired.

One huge disadvantage of owning an EREV is the very thing that makes it special, the ICE. Even though I love engines, it's time for those who can move on to the future to do so. It's better technology with virtually no maintenance when the latest and greatest EV tech is assembled.

I would encourage Ford to make ERVs an option and keep pure EV trucks as standard. You won't convince most Lightning owners to move to EREVs.

Just remember, Chevy will be laughing all the way to the bank as Lightning owners are forced to move over in order to keep driving pure electric trucks.

Don't forget the size of the engine that will be needed to meet full power demand when the battery is drained. There can likely be some buffer by load spreading, but I would think they would need at least either the Coyote V8 (boosted)? or the 3.5L twin turbo Ecoboost. We have 580HP and 775 ftlbs of torque (ER variants), it takes a lot of motor to match that.

That's a lot of motor to run a generator.

Riddle me this Batman... why was it exactly the same in the late 1800s and early 1900s, by actual records, before diesel trucks and interstate highways and aerosol cans and all the other things the tree huggers claim is ruining the planet? If we use records, and not assumptions, there is nothing new going on.

There is a huge difference now - in the late 1800's, the electrical infrastructure was just being installed (TVA didn't exist) and gasoline was a waste product in the petroleum refining process (available at very low cost). Now, the electrical infrastructure is built out, but not capable to supply at full demand and gas production is the focus of refining. The distribution network for gas is well established and DC charging is in its infancy. The energy density of liquid gasoline makes it attractive until something like liquid H2 or fuel cells become more economically feasible.

Ford will be putting a gas generator in the vehicle to keep the battery charged and increase range and towing capacity.

It will not be a hybrid; there will be no gas engine.

I am not sure I would buy it, but I understand it.

It is better than a hybrid with two powertrains and engines.

Given the government's hostile stance on EVs and renewable energy, this might be the best way forward for now. IMO, the people who love their trucks were the last people to embrace 100% EVs.

The engine is just a generator, all it need to do is supply more than you take out. (on average, battery takes the peaks)
If they add a 130kW generator you'd probably need, say 200kW (or 270hp) to drive it, you can get that from a turbo charged 3-4 cylinder engine.

Since you're not dealing with driveability, or any of those issues, just ideal power and the best efficiency at a given (fixed) working point / rpm they have a lot more flexibility vs. a traditional ICE drivetrain.

I am confused. Reading this bullentin sounds like the Lightniong will remain as an EREV but the news says the Lightning name will remain as a plug in hybrid. Those are two very different things.
