Most likely a smart business move by Ford - glad I got my Lightning to own a great truck that unfortunately the masses don't know about nor want: being a POWERBOOST fan, this looks like a variation that will be very similar but with a faster, smoother drivetrain, so I think it will fly. I'm gonna leave all the green stuff alone, but just say I'm not in a Lightning to be green. IMO nothing wrong with OIL & GAS! FORD is a great company, and I will continue to consider FORDs!

You are also forgetting the use case for max towing uphill with a dead battery. To be successful, I think you need to support that without a significant loss in performance. That would put the generators max sustained output closer to 300kw (or 400hp)

Yeah that was basically just for an ideal situation. I don't forsee it being possible for them to fully power the battery using the generator.

Fine. But Ford isn't building trucks FOR YOU. They are building trucks for the masses, and the masses buy trucks because they need to haul or tow. Otherwise they'd buy a car.

And what happens when the original owner sells it or trades it in one day? Maybe the second owner is a guy who NEEDS a truck and will tow with it. Ford has to engineer these things to do their intended purpose, regardless of whether YOU will or not.



As someone with a degree in meteorology/climatology who has been studying weather and climate for 40 years, all I have to say to this is that if you're that gullible I've got some ocean front property in Kansas I'll make you a KILLER deal on.

It’s not the US. It’s the market. Unfortunately at this time people don’t want EVs in mass. I like the idea of letting the market decide. When the prices are right, and the time to charge shortens and you can tow a decent distance I think lots more people will go that way. I love my 23 ER. I won’t be getting rid of it anytime soon. In fact I don’t think I’d go back to a ICE vehicle. But there are others that think differently. The problem was we were creating a false market by incentivizing people to buy one using tax dollars. Believe we all pay for it. That money does not come out of thin air. The market will correct and we will see what comes of it.

Based on the lackluster Lightning sales, how can anyone say this is a bad idea? I know everyone here loves their truck on this board, but Mach-E sales have outpaced the Lightning by a fairly wide margin, which means the market right now for an all-electric truck isn’t looking great.

I don’t mind the idea, so I’ll wait to see the details. Hopefully, it’s not a full-blown V6 that Dodge is using.

And Mach E sales suck too. It’s on borrowed time until the new stuff starts coming out, then likely toast too. It’s getting long in the tooth anyway at this point

EREV's are also plug and charge typically.

Agreed. They are bleeding money on the lightning right now especially because the size of the battery and its cost associated with it so this battery is going to be significantly smaller. I bet you anything that electric only range is gonna be about 120 to 150 miles and the rest is gonna be gas.

If I understand what they've announced, 100% of the power to the wheels will be from the electric motors and the ICE generator will recharge the battery on the move. The amount of gas used will depend on how far one needs to go between charge locations.
