AC charging reducing

I’m on a road trip, I only have access to public AC chargers J1772 and Tesla destination chargers.

I normally get 9.5-10.4kw with these units. The last couple nights I lost charge around 6 hrs in, both times the chargers showed a red light and was clearly experiencing an error of sorts. (Really not a nice start to a day expecting a full charge and finding a 61% level when I was expecting 100%)

Tonight I plugged into a non Tesla AC charger and it stopped a couple minutes after connecting. Error on app was “Charging error”Red flashing light. I then plugged into a Tesla Destination charger and it started out around 8.5kw but over the past 6 hours dropped to 5.4kw. I’m at about 55% now and I’m perplexed.

Why would a charger just stop working?
Why would my charging gradually reduce so much?
I can add it’s hot out, and I drove about 5 hours…..when I plugged in.
Any thoughts?

Damaged pins on the j1772 adapter (when using the Tesla destination charger(s))??

I have had the 110 charger quit several times when plugged into random outlets. I suspect it has something to do with the load on the circuit and the charger shutting off to prevent problems.

Given that you have similar problems across multiple EVSEs, Check your J1772 port (and adapter) and make sure the pins are clean and not damaged. If not, clean them using a NON-RESIDUE electrical cleaner. Public EVSE guns can get dirty too, since they are used by many and often. I carry NON-RESIDUE electrical cleaner in the truck just in case. Make sure everything is dry before plugging it in. Otherwise, try to keep the gun, adapter and charge port out of direct sunlight.

There have also been cases of heat sensors in charge ports and adapters going out of spec, causing an early slowdown as you describe. If you don't see a slowdown on your home EVSE, your charge port is probably ok.

WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner, correct? Or 91% alcohol on cotton swap, ensuring you leave no cotton pieces.

My home charger in high heat has occasionally dropped kWH.

I think the amperage can become throttled at very high temps. Just a though given its august.
