Wow.
More charger infrastructure is what I'd like to see instead of 0% SOC.

My 0% was purposeful as I arrived home. I pay as little as possible at DCFC chargers on my way home.

Be careful, out of spec reviews and others have found that the Ford BMS has some ‘drift’ and there are reports of the truck dying while still showing range and nonzero battery percentage. It seems to be related to fast charging on the road.

We all know that the guess-o-meter is not exact, but determining the percentage of battery left after a discharge is also (almost) guesswork. Battery state of charge is not really a linear function and Ford’s implementation is particularly obscure to me. I have no trouble taking my Kia close to zero, but I‘m not going below 10% for the Lightning.

It provides stronger regeneration without turning on full 1PD. Some people like it.
How do you access the L since there's no selector position for that? I NEVER use 1PD mode (tried it, do not like it), and there are times where more aggressive regen would be nice - mostly driving down steep dirt roads from mountain top radio sites.

Back in days of yore, cash strapped souls such as I regularly drove VW bugs to uh.. the right hand point of “R” (See image below). But occasionally circumstances necessitated continuing on with what I now call Schrödinger‘s fuel tank. Was the fuel there or no?

I could look into the dark void of an apparent bottomless tank, and couldn’t see fuel but the bug kept running. In fact I drove to the left edge of R (that little point). And when I arrived home after 55 knuckle testing miles I asked my father what he thought and he said “Well, drive it to the station in the morning and see how much it takes” (this assumes it’ll start). So I did.

It started fine, drove it a mile west to Shell. Filled it up to the fill tube base plus an inch up the short tube And about 2” below the cap. 10 gallons. About $3.00 total. LOL. It clearly wasn’t empty. Maybe Schrödinger’s fuel line, filter, carb where messing with me. Come to think of it.. I never ran out of gas with that bug… with a black hole of a fuel tank.

The Mach E has an L button in the middle of the dial.

...well, this all reminds me of one of my first long trips. I had one of my sons with me, going to one of my other son's home, which, at the time, was up a 25% grade at the very last 100 yards or so...

anyway, I knew I had 240v charging at his home, so arriving 'on zero' was not really a problem, but getting there, toward the last of the 250 mile trip, without stopping, was going to be 'tight', to say the least... but, I know I had a long extension cord with me : )

anyhoo, as we drew closer and closer, the SOC % was slowly dropping, and, several miles away, was lower than I would like, but, I was determined...

so, taking some of my experience from back in my '66 Mustang Convertible 289 4bbl days, with a Hurst shifter on the floor, as we dropped into the start of that very last grade, I GUNNED it, hoping to sap every bit of little power I had left, giving me a LOT of momentum up the hill, even if the power dropped to zero.

NOTHING HAPPENED....well, except that the truck actually came to a complete STOP, a mere hundred foot up the hill, even with my foot SQUARELY still on the 'gas' pedal... oh my!

NOT GOOD. Period.

but, it was the dead of night. No other traffic. A very 'rural' mountainous street. Uh oh, I wonder what I'm going to do now?

I pondered this for a quick moment, relenting to the fact that, well, I just may have to take out that very, very long extension cord... but, alas, in this position, on the street, no, not the best option. A generator in the morning might be a better thought.

So, being in the middle of the street, looking UP the grade, I knew I had to somehow remove my truck from 'traffic', the little there might be. I had just passed a small driveway a few 50 foot back, so I put the truck in NEUTRAL, let it slide back slowly, and backed into the drive, which put me pointed again back downhill, where I let the momentum and gravity now take the truck back onto the street and back down to the main road, close by.
I let gravity roll me across the road, and onto the side of the ditch, out of traffic, where I planned on leaving it. I went a little too far, and instinctively applied the brakes, and shoved it into REVERSE...

IT MOVED BACKWARDS! hunh?!! Oh My... what?! Yes, it was in gear, AND it had POWER.

at that moment, and not wanting to temp fate, I put the "Pedal to the Metal" and drove that LIGHTNING backwards, in REVERSE, all the way up the 25% grade and into my son's driveway!
(well, as fast as one could reverse, in the black of night, on a dark rural path, with only rear lights... you get the idea)

with 1% SOC showing, you would think there would have been no problem, but I believe my 'stomping' the pedal on the initial try caused the issue. the truck had dropped in 'Power', even though I had not noticed - so my asking for 100% sudden power was not received with a positive response. I took that to mean 'dead', but, it was not. It was just letting me know I was demanding too much, too quickly, with little means for it to respond that way. Like a child who has been 'told' firmly to GO!, but they just sit there, crossed arms, defiant.
(technically, it was probably the mechanics of putting the gear in Reverse that 'loosened' the Power.)

fun stuff

There's no (L) option directly in the Lightning, but setting the drive mode to Tow/Haul will give you slightly stronger regen than when one pedal is off and weaker regen than full 1pd. At least on flat roads. I haven't tested it without a trailer on slopes.

I did a test from 20 mph letting the vehicle decelerate to 10 mph without braking. On a gravel road without a slope:
Normal mode, 1pd ON: <3 seconds
Normal mode, 1pd OFF: ~11 seconds
Tow/Haul, 1pd OFF: ~8 seconds
