My point was that if he uses away from home charging, he can't rely on the data in a trip odometer because it includes that.

As to accuracy - I can attest that my Trip 1 and Trip 2 miles per kilowatt data were reset on a recent trip, without any human intervention. Miles did not change. So, the displayed miles per kilowatt hour was, and is now permanently, inaccurate as a result. I never reset Trip 2 on my cars. I had 3,1 miles per kilowatt hour over over 4,100 miles. Then I drove the last leg of my trip and got home. That leg of the trip was 2.8. My Trip 2 now read 2.8. Anyone doing basic math knows you can't take a weighted average over 4,100 miles, add 150 miles at 2.8, and take the whole average down to 2.8.

I have to disagree with some of this based on what OP asked for.

First he stated he was trying to determine cost of using a non-smart home charger. So he is trying to determine cost of using that. All the other methods presented were also around monitoring this home charger usage. None of these account for away charging and I don’t think he asked for that.

I’m not sure about trip data resetting. Current Trip does indeed reset weirdly and is highly inaccurate. I calculate my efficiency using odometer and battery SOC and I get results similar with Trip 1,2 which I rarely reset though. So I would be interested if you have done detailed testing of Trip 1,2. I have only 1200 miles so I can’t say for sure how accurate Trip 1,2 are.

I acknowledge the fixed cost component. I worked for the electric company for 35 years and have done hundreds of energy audits. Fixed costs are more impactful with commercial and industrial rates though because of high kW charges. Residential rates are usually just a customer charge which I can teach OP to account for. But again, all the other methods presented have the same issue. They get to what the KWh usage is of the home charger and go from there.

It seems like many here have Time of Use rates so they need to use those rates. But even then it can be complicated. Much of Texas is deregulated so the bill may have retail charges and delivery charges. Either one or both may be tiered.

Not everyone wants this accurate to the penny as so I tried to present a simple method that gives them a reasonably accurate talking point.
This is getting good.... Yeah I'm only worried about home charging.

Ha! Nope this won’t be one of those threads! Glad to see you changed your mind again and went back to the “easy” way. Those Emporia units look nice. May have to get one myself. I’m totally frustrated with the FCSP. Says it has energy “Insights” but it misses many of my charge sessions.

Yes. I have one on my main and one on my FCSP.

And when you set it up you can input your billing schedule and it will give you a total used for the month.

If you have the emporia charger…the data should be just as accurate right? I assume they actually measure it rather than estimate it ? I also assume it measures the total energy flowing through (accounts for losses) rather than only what gets to the truck (does not include losses)?

I would like to get the whole home system like you have but for now I‘d like to use the built in Emporia charger data if it’s accurate.

Why not go with the emporia charger? They are only $400 and you can get 30% back on your taxes. They also can be hardwired or plug in and can charge amperage up to 48A. I know you have a charger already but if the emporia would be an upgrade…maybe it’s the best way rather than having an extra system?

Food for thought. One reason I went with emporia is the ability to use these sensors you guys are talking About and having one complete system with one app. I also got it for the ability to integrate with solar easily to adjust charging times/amount. not sure how good that feature is, but I saw it and figured it’s an added bonus if I get solar.

The data is accurate on the Emporia charger. It measures what is being used, not just what is being delivered to the vehicle. But we only use it on the wife's Mach-E. That is why I bought a main unit to monitor the FCSP. I found that the 50A sensor leads would only measure accurately up to about 63 amps. I currently derate my FCSP down to about 54 amps but wanted the ability to track it if I decided to use it at full power.

In my photo the mains loops are being used exclusively on the FCSP feeds which is OK for my needs where I'm not concerned about the smaller 15 & 20 amp circuits.

I already bought a Grizzl-E back in September when it was on sale didn't get the smart version because I saw people saying the app wasn't the greatest. I watched a video from State of Charge on YouTube and his review convince me to get it because it was UL listed and had a decent warranty and excellent build quality. Even buying that monitor it's still cheaper that the smart Grizzl-E would of been plus I can wire up my breaker panel in the future if I get a wild hair or two.

The Emporia EVSE is the best deal out there right now. The low price along with the app can't be beat.

Ahhh ok makes complete sense! I went with the emporia because they just got UL listed recently and I am hoping my power company adds them to the list of qualified chargers for a rate reduction 🙏🏻. The charger needs to be smart. I probably wouldn’t went with your logic if that wasn’t the case.

North Carolina hates EV's as far as I'm concerned we don't get any incentives aside from a power company (that I work for) that isn't my service provider has for EV chargers. I have to pay an extra $140 on top of my registration next year because it's an EV and I don't pay gasoline taxes.

I use a Brultech Greeneye Monitor to monitor my circuits. It also allows me to track daily/monthly usage on individual circuits... Next will be to add the Wall Charger. I do plan to control charging current to even out usage and reduce charge current in case other high usage devices are running (e.g. dryer, ac, pool). This is mostly to even out power consumption throughout the day.

I have to pay an extra $140 on top of my registration next year because it's an EV and I don't pay gasoline taxes.
Same with Michigan but ours is $150.

What really got me is my plates are good until March. When I transferred my plates from my ICE truck to my Lightning back in October, they dinged me for the $150. When the wife's Mach-E came in December and we transferred her plate from her Edge we were eligible to renew them both because of their 90 day rule. I had to pay the $150 again on my truck plate.

They got me good.

I purchased a non smart charger just want a way to calculate KW usage to calculate monthly use/cost. Not sure If anyone is savvy with Excel. Not even sure which way would be best to calculate this.... IDK 😄
I have an Autel 40 AMP maxi charger and Duke Energy charges me .09/kwh. The app shows graphs per month and you can export raw data to excel:
