Coming from a Model X. I was able to charge that at about 32 miles per hour on our NEMA 14-50 plug. With the Ford Mobile charger it is so much slower. Last night, it put 101 miles on in 9 hrs and 25 min. Is this normal?

Thanks,

Tim

Remember its not the miles added per hour you should be looking at..its Kw added per hour.

The Lightning will always seem "slower " than Model X even if you are adding the same KW because it is less efficient. Also, with extended range a much bigger battery to fill.

If you have the ER model, the battery is 131kWh.

Ford Mobile Charger is 30amps, delivers about 7.2kW. Figure 10% loss or so to the truck, that's 6.5kW.

131/6.5 = 20 hours to fully charge from 0, or about 5% per hour.

Also, the ford mobile charger charges at about 30 amps. The 14-50 outlet will allow charging at up to 40 amps. So if the x charged at 32mph, the ford mobile charger would probably deliver 24 or 25 miles to the x. The lower efficiency of the lightning further reduces the miles added in a given time.

Getting a decent 40A wall unit is a worthwhile investment. Leave the mobile charger in the frunk for emergency use. I've only used the mobile charger once but it doesn't strike me as being durable enough for everyday use.

I think I will hook up the Ford Charger Pro and setting the max current to 40 amps.

Thoughts?

If you have the capacity go for the full 80 amps with wiring at 100 amp and 100 amp breaker.

This is the kind of performance I'm getting with such a setup, adjust my results to half if you go the 40 amp route due to limitations of service and wiring.

Note one flaw on this calculation, is that they are using the optimum consumption rate not the seasonally adjusted rate my truck is requiring, so in reality, the range extension was not really 96 mile!

Footnote, the actual energy draw of this session was 40kWh, per the connected charge station log and my Emporia Vue2 energy log, also the prefered value s/b 90% and the preferred charge amount is NOT 402 miles. These APP developers need 30 lashes for shoddy coding

Just looking at at data from a public charge last night and thought the data would be relevant.

Data From Charge Point:
  • Charger rating 6.6kW
  • Charge time 1.5 hr
  • Actual power delivered to the truck Plug. 8.81 kWh (charger never delivered more than 6.1 kW)

Weather 50 deg F, no wind.

Data from Ford app.
  • Energy added to the ER battery 6% (85% to 91%) = 7.86kWh
  • Distance added - 17 miles
  • Calculated mi/kwh based on this charge - 2.16 (really good for me as I do love me some torque)
  • Ford did not record the 16 mile Trip to this charger so I cannot verify efficiency.

Charging efficiency - 7.86/8.81 = 89.2% or 10.8% lost between charger and battery.

I wish I could. We have a 100amp sub panel in the garage for mine and my wife’s. Each is 50 amp.

40A isn't terrible. Most people would be fine at 40A if you can charge overnight.

I'm completely OK with 48A. I have a 38mi(round trip) commute daily and could still make it 4 days between charges despite the frigid temps in NYS. (To me he 80A EVSE from Ford is overkill)

Yes, I would think the huge size is designed for enabling acting as a generator for the house. We can run comfortably with a 30A backfeed!

When I had my EVSE installed there was a huge jump in price from 60A breaker/wiring for a 48A charger vs having the breaker and wiring for the 80A unit. To me the price was not worth it since I would NOT be using backup power. (We have a in-line natural gas whole house backup generator)

Full backup power from vehicle to home inverter using the Ford system is 40A/9.6 kW. You can hardwire the FCSP for 40A or 48A charging and still get the full backup power. It's overkill for me, too.
