People at work are constantly asking why they won’t put a bunch of 120v receptacles in the parking lot… “you can tap into the parking lot lights”… sure one EV might be able to charge off that circuit but there are over 100 registered EVs at work. Circuit can’t take that.

2025 models have this option. It's really nice to have it.

And there’s no reason the earlier models couldn’t have it. It’s built in to all EVs, just needs to be exposed to the UI.

Depends on the service. Many office parks in my area have multiple 200A-400A panels. Maybe not 100 outlets, but certainly more than a few.

If Ford doesn’t get AC charge rate on older vehicles soon, this will be my last Ford. This includes ability to use 30TT. It’s critical for folks like me who go to RV parks to charge often. Those setups are old and prone to tripping. My 2015 MS is more advanced. I have had to reduce the 240v charging in half at some parks in order to keep charging.

yeah. Folks just think it’s an easy upgrade though and will allow 10 EVs to charge in a row of cars. Definitely not that easy and would require a bunch of dedicated circuits.

Note: I run the extension cord into the frunk where the mobile charger is hidden. I run the J1772 plug out from the LVB panel and through the wheel well so the EVSE isn’t visible to passersby.

My knee jerk reaction was to grab my pitchfork and soapbox to tell you that you can't charge your truck through the frunk outlets...but what you've done is bloody genius. So simple and in a decade of EV ownership never once thought to hide my charger.

I'll put my pitchfork away and return to my cage of inferiority now..

I charged at home via L1 for the first 6 months. My drive to work is short, so it was doable. Obviously I love now having L2 as I basically just charge on the weekend.

Charged on L1 while staying at a house we rented and was impressed with how far it got us. We only drove to town or the beach, but got to the house with 78% or so, and over the weekend would plug in any time we got back to the house. For the drive home I was at 90% even with the driving we did while at the house, all from a 120 outlet.

It’s surprising how it adds up since on the surface it’s so slow. So for a full weekend trip we only had to stop at a SuperCharger once where if I had not used the 120 at the house we would have had to stop at a DCFC at some point on the drive home as well. Saved us an easy $10-15 and the time stopping to charge.

Sometimes it helps to do an analysis from a totally different perspective. I have calculated that on average my Lightning gets about 2 miles per kWh, and I pay between 10 and 12 cents per kWh.

Would you push a 7000 lb. truck 2 MILES for 10 to 12 cents? From this perspective, this is incomprehensible work and cost efficiency.

That little sip of power from a 120 volt receptacle could save a lot of sweat in an unexpected and unplanned situation.

This…and…I’m not sure why anyone would dismiss a 10% increase in charge (10-12 hours overnight when nothing else is going on). As long as it’s not causing any trouble. The misguided perfectionism some people have just doesn’t make sense to me.

So many pooh-pooh L1 charging it is incredible. Every little bit helps, especially if it is available for free.

Yea, it's less efficient, and yea, it won't precondition your battery, but it's still energy.

My father passed away this month, and since the beginning of the year, I've spent a lot of time at his place and have left the L1 mobile charger from my FFE there so that we could plug in either vehicle while there. Sometimes it would only be two hours, sometimes more than six.

I have a cousin that has TWO EVs and only ONE 120-volt outlet in the garage, and they've been fine with that for over a year. They are looking into getting a device that allows a 24A L2 charger to share the clothes dryer circuit by automatically disconnecting the charger when the dryer is turned on, but it's not been an urgent need so far.

For most people, their weekday driving habits can be completely charged using L1 if they have access to an outlet at home and at work. For a workplace, it costs about $1000 and 7 kW of panel capacity to add an L2 unit, though there are units that can share the circuit by limiting each. For the same $1000 and panel capacity, SIX regular outlets can be installed each on their own circuit for simultaneous use.
Indeed! I use 120v home charging exclusively on my Lightning Pro.....unless I'm on a long trip somewhere. In fact, because I only use my truck for "truck" things, it's parked in my shop most of the time, so I put in a 2,000 watt off grid solar system with a LiFe 5kW battery and a EG4 solar controller and inverter, and just leave my truck plugged into the 120v power virtually all the time.....it's always ready to go when I need it.
In fact, I can have it plugged in and charging WHILE I'm charging my other EVs (Chevy Spark, Tesla Y, BMW X5) on level 2 220v from the ProPower truck bed outlet! This is truly an amazingly cool set up!!!!
