sw engineering manager,
Tried out a new small shop in town to have a leaky tire on my F150 fixed. The mechanics there were somewhat unfamiliar with the Lightning and asked me a bunch of questions about it.

First they were like "didn't even realize that was electric when you dropped it off. It looks just like an F150."
A: "It IS just like an F150."

Then its always "What is the range?"
And my answer is "I thought the small battery with only 240 miles would be annoying, but turns out I don't care at all because I NEVER have to stop to charge for daily driving. Just have to remember to plug it in at night when its low, same as charging a phone. Also, I never have to BUY gas - and electricity is super cheap here."

That alone is enough to get them thinking.

Year over year looking like CT and R1T both took a big hit.
I wonder how many 2025 Lightning sales 'might' have been those other two, and what motivated a change to the F-150 or GM instead.
My own case, I was interested in the Rivian, but the smaller size, and higher price were negatives.

I was also in the category of first wanting a Rivian. Then I decided to wait a bit and the Lightning came down to a 'normal' price and I didn't like how Rivian was still relying on massive investments to stay afloat. I still hope they come out the other end and will look at them in 5-10 years when I'm ready to replace the Lightning.

Also, if Tesla made a normal looking truck, I would have went with that. I will still move to a Tesla truck if they make a normal truck in the future.

Sorry to double-post, but I also wanted to mention that I've noticed more Lightnings over the last year in my neck of the woods. I haven't seen any more CT or Rivians than what was normal. It kind of gives me hope that maybe Ford will keep the Lightning around and just keep making a steady supply (and hopefully make money).

Same, when the Lightning first landed at local dealers in 2022 and was selling ABOVE MSRP prices I told myself - just wait a few years.
By end of 2024 the prices were well below MSRP, discounts and negotiations were on the table. But not with the R1T, so I test drove two XLT's the lightning and the 5-litre.
Running the streets of Winnipeg in January, the Lightning blew me away with it's handling in snow and on ice - even with the OEM tires on it. Very happy with the truck, and I too hope they keep them in production, and maybe the influence of the members on all the people we know...maybe we get a few more 'bums in seats'

We should have a National 'Take a buddy on a test drive in your Lightning Day'

This is great to see. I know it’s the tax credit ending sales bump but at this point it has to be costing Ford a little less to make these things compared to 2022.

If we assume it cost Billions to develop the truck and set up the assembly plant,
and then divide by, say 75,000 Lightnings sold to date?

For every Billion invested that is $13,300 per truck. Let that sink in.

If it cost just two billion to launch, then the cost per truck to date is $26,600 and they still have to cover the parts and assembly for each truck on top of this.

I think the sunk costs of development and the assembly plant tooling/set up will take a lot more truck sales to have a chance to spread that out thin enough. Something like 200,000 trucks would have been more in line with the investment.

Hope they keep working on the Lightning until the next battery tech leap comes - something lighter, cheaper, faster-charging. Then launch a Second Gen Lightning. By then public charging may be up to the task - pull throughs, more DCFC more public acceptance.
