HVAC - recirculate air button doesn't stay on

Hey all

I have a 2024 Lightning Flash, and I have noticed for a while now that the recirculation button doesn't stay on for very long. Wondering if anyone else has seen this or has a resolution.

When I click into the climate screen, and then toggle the recirculation button, I hear the difference in the air flow as it starts to comply with what i told it to do....I exit the climate screen back to Android Auto, then I notice that I can smell that farm trailer that pulled in ahead of me, or that brush fire smoke that property is burning. So I click back into climate menu, and the recirculate button is off again. Like 30 seconds after I turned it on.

Has anyone else noticed something like this? Where the recirc button just won't stay on/toggled?

Recirc will stay on if you do not use “Auto” and direct air to the dash vents only.

I never use Auto. I mostly keep air flow to the driver floor.

I turn recirc off but I can tell it's still recirculating by the sound. Recirculating makes the fan sound a little more hollow. I have played with it and I think I have found if you lower the heat temp setting with the recirc still showing off, it will stop recirculating (again, by the sound).

I like to run HVAC manually and I can't stand that the truck still likes to "do me the favor" of still automatically controlling things.

Yes, other people have seen this, search in the forums if you like but no workaround.

Many (many) years ago, I was an automotive engineer in Climate Control. When it was warm out and the AC compressor was running, recirc would stay on as long as the customer wanted recirc. However, if the compressor was off, regardless of temp, the recirc would automatically revert back to “outside air” after a minute or two to prevent internal fogging of the windows, particularly the windshield. Not sure if that’s your situation; just wanted to let you know there’s a safety reason for turning off recirc automatically, under certain conditions.

If, however, your compressor was running and recirc turned off, I can only speculate that it’s to save battery. Recirc mode pushes more air and that means more blower work and higher amperage, therefore more power consumption 🫤

Like @Maquis said, do not use auto if you want recirc. I have had good luck with this on road trips that pass by dairy farms.

@Ford Motor Company and it would be awesome if we could get the recirc button up on the main screen instead of having to get into the climate details to turn it on. Maybe replace the superfluous max def. button on the screen
