After an arduous 6 month wait my Lightning Lariat finally arrived yesterday and I was going to pick it up today. But it's not happening. My dealer said that the NTHS safety recall prohibits him from selling the vehicle.

from the document (attached) " Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. § 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect. "

The dealer also confirmed that the fix wouldn't be available until Q4. The recall letter is dated June 15th. It specifies Ford is recalling "certain my22 and my23 lightnings (no pros) and 16,375 vehicles are involved.

We know that they had a replacement but the replacement turned out defective also. Seems to me that unless they have a fix they can't sell anything. Why is there no FMC announcement that they cannot sell any Lariats., Platinums, or XLT's? (Note that my Lariat was built on 6/9, the same date as FMC's report to the NTSA.)

This sucks for buyers. But, it is federal law.

After waiting 4 1/2 months with virtually zero communication on when my fully built (on 2/5) lightning would ship, now with me less then an hour from picking it up it's on hold just like in February with absolutely no idea when I can get it.

My patience wore out and I cancelled the deal. The dealer is giving me a full refund.

Honestly if you still want a Lightning, I'd recommend looking for a mannequin being sold as new, there are so many out there and they are often marked down now. And if you're okay with lightly used, there are sub 1K mileage Lightnings for incredible discounts, just gotta look.

Those would all fall under the recall as well.

I was in the same situation as @davehu as the Lariat i ordered was built on March 16, 2023 and is included in the recall. My dealer was not allowed to deliver the Lariat i ordered, but they had a Platinum, in the same colour, in stock that was built in April 2023 that is not included in the recall. i ended up abandoning my Lariat and bought the Platinum they had instead. I have had it for 1 week now.

As mentioned by @TaxmanHog the recall only affects Lariats and Platinum's built before March 29, 2023. Lariats and Platinum's built on March 29th 2023 or later can be sold and delivered.

Sorry you've been a victim of particularly bad coincidences. First the battery stop-sale, then this. I'd walk, too. The safety recall announcement came on June 13th. I think only higher trim XLT ERs have that lightbar, so they probably can sell some XLTs. A safety recall is always a stop-sale for unsold new vehicles.

What a coincidence. Ford says they will build more XLT. Seems like they only build the lower trims when there is a parts shortage

The safety recall was for trucks built from 10/14/2022 - 3/28/2023. That Ford is still producing and selling trucks means they have a fix in place... just not enough parts to repair 16,000 effected vehicles. In my case... well it's complicated.. see the thread 1/30/2023 Build week for the gory details.

Lucky you. Your dealer is stuck however! I'm in a smaller market and there are no lariats to be had. My excitement went to frustration went back to excitement as I sat in my vehicle yesterday morning hours away from driving it home only to have the rug pulled out under me. But now I just plain pissed a FMC. I will take a while to get the bad taste out of my mouth. oh... one other thing I haven't posted about was also yesterday morning I was to meett a wholesaler who was driving 4 hours (from Dallas) to give me $20k cash for my Avalanche He texted me that he was 20 minutes from our meeting place at my bank. While I was reading his text my dealer called to tell me the news. I immediately called the guy and cancelled. The wholesaler, Texas Auto Sales, were completely understanding as I promised I would return the $500 deposit they had sent me. He had a long 4 hour drive back to Dallas with nothing to show for it.

Slight correction to the above statement — Affected build dates are October 14, 2021 through March 28, 2023.

I guess this means that pre-production and all retail/fleet sale trucks built through March 28, 2023 with rear light bars are affected.
