This is probably a really stupid question, but with the talk of 12V batteries dying, it made me question what my backup would be were my 12V to die while I had the truck locked.

I use my PAAK, almost exclusively, and when that doesn't work, enter my door code. But, if the 12V is dead, neither of these will work, correct?

So, basic question..... Can I just go to my local hardware store, and have them cut a key that I could "hide" so I could get in the vehicle were 12V to die?

You have a key inside each fob... Plus, you have a key without fob inside your glove box or given to you at time of delivery.

Since you apparently don't want to carry a fob, take the loose key and do whatever you want with it.

To answer your question, I don't think the local hardware store would be equipped to cut that key. I think you would have a better chance getting it from the dealer...IMHO

I think this is true.

Another reason to carry a fob, or to locate and use the skeleton key from the globebox when desired:

1. Glove box can be locked, during service times or during valet handling, or...
2. Center console can be locked with same key (the keyhole is on the front edge of the center console cover) for the same reasons.
3. The spare wheel can be locked with the key. Another post on the forum lists the part # for the spare wheel lock which can be keyed at dealership to the truck key. And yes, the back of the spare wheel lock can be easily doped up so that its cylinder's rear circlip is invisible and hard to access by a thief.

4) The rear seat can be locked for those with the underseat storage compartment.

I just went through this. As some might find it hard to imagine, Ford has specific licensed software for cutting our truck keys. I found a locksmith in Mary Esther FL, A to Z Locksmith, that has the software license. They will cut one key for $35 or two keys for $50. I ordered my blanks from NorthCoast Keyless for $11 each. It took the locksmith about 15 minutes and both keys work just as good as the OEM keys. A to Z has a few locations, you'll want to ask for the Mary Esther store if you call or email them. I also picked up an extra fob, removed the battery, and found a hiding spot for it.

Pretty sure nearly any locksmith can cut the physical key. The dealer will charge you for another fob plus an ungodly amount for a few minutes of work.

Thanks.

I called my local Ford dealer, and they can cut the blank, it's $50.

I may have to change my habits, and carry the fob with me. I'm getting close to three years on the original battery, and am starting to get nervous if the 12V did die.

I am just over three years and am going to replace the 12v battery this week. No sense on waiting for problems to pop up.
