Will You be upgrading to the Lightning EREV?

Will You be upgrading to the Lightning EREV?

  • Yes - The Lightning EREV range extender will be useful

  • No - The current Lightning provides sufficient range/capabilities for long term ownership

  • Unsure - Will have to see the final Lightning EREV specs/pricing

  • Other - Will leave the Lightning for something different (other brand EV truck, gas F-150 etc...)

By the way - a word to the wise. If you like the truck and have the money and they have screaming deals, I'd get a spare. We had a Mercedes R diesel which was our road trip car. We loved the thing (despite the leaks on the driveway) and since it wasn't our daily driver, it was pristine with low miles (60K or so). When it was destroyed it was impossible to replace and we didn't get anywhere near the value of the car to us. The other driver's insurance company was giving us comps in Florida at 200,000 miles with torn seats and broken bits, or gas versions which are not comparable at all. We tried to fight it but it did not work.

We literally could not find anything like it, just like I am right now having a really hard time replacing my T-100 with a similar single cab long bed pickup. For 50K+ I don't want a white stripped down "work truck" when the T-100 was the highest trim at the time (ooh look at that Dolby cassette player) and had what passed for a nice cabin in the 1990s. Honestly the controls are easier to use than the Lightning's but I digress...

Despite the car being long out of production (we lost it in 2018) Mercedes never had any hint of trouble supporting it - even though they no longer sold many Diesels. The T-100 has not been made since Clinton was President and the shop isn't having any trouble finding parts.

I’m good with my ‘22 Lariat ER until the battery warranty runs out. I have already had two battery modules replaced (one at 11,000 miles and the second at 23,000 miles), but an out of warranty module replacement would be very expensive, so will probably change vehicles before 8 years/100,00 miles.

Can't say delivering this news was a career highlight for me, and I really appreciate your understanding. At least from my point of view... I'll continue to be in here and provide information and updates for y'all. As I said, I'm not going anywhere.
Brian, I appreciate having you here as a presence on this board and interacting with us on behalf of the manufacturer. I think you posted in another thread you have a lightning on order. Are you going to get your order or are they going to match you with something in stock somewhere?

Great memory and thanks for asking. I was really looking forward to driving my own Lightning - for now I'm keeping the MME Rally and I will decide later what to do. Love my Rally.

I love the lightning... no EREV for me next truck will be Rivian, I will never go back to any Vehicle that uses fuel the Lightning has been so comfortable, great power and absolute amazing... I feel Ford has kicked us to the curb.

This is Unbelievably stupid approach. BMW tried it more than 10 years ago when they produced the I3 ER and it failed miserably. just watch Hagerty video and someone send it to Jim Farley to watch it.
a smarter approach would be if the Truck is capable to be hooked to a regular Generator and charge while driving when necessary. this way if I'm towing I can load a gas generator in the bed and use it when needed, instead of adding second power source that will need to be serviced and add complexity to the vehicle.

EREV is not an upgrade from my point of view, it is a step backwards. More maintenance, more things to fail, and it does not add any gains I require. It does not fit my use case. Now that I have owned two BEVs (also have a Mach-E) I’ll never go back to anything ICE powered, at least for a land vehicle.

I am largely against the idea of an EREV. It may push me to buy a truck from someone besides Ford, and I have only had Ford vehicles in my garage since I moved out on my own. I don't want oil changes or gas station stops, and my experience with a PHEV has been that it's the worst of both worlds as it never has as much electric range as I want, and the engine was cycling regularly just to keep itself maintained and I see no reason that won't happen with the EREV. People saying you would only need it once or twice per year are providing the exact evidence for why this isn't the best option for many.

That said, I understand why Ford and others see this as a strong approach for a truck. i don't tow a travel trailer (and wouldn't with a half ton anyway), but those that have been BEV curious but tow travel trailers are in a tough spot. While ICE vehicles suffer huge mileage drops when towing a TT, they have a much easier time finding a refueling spot that has pull through refueling. I don't see nearly enough charging stations set up for the same, at least in the midwest.

I just wish Ford wasn't completely stepping back and had the strength of their convictions enough to offer a next gen Lightning with a 70 kWh + 15 gallon fuel tank EREV or a 141 kWh BEV on a single platform. They manage multiple engines/fuel systems with the ICE F-150, but suddenly want to only go backwards to the EREV for the Lightning.

I like the frunk, and suspect the EREV will cause it to be lost or severely diminished. I use it far more than the once or twice per year PHEV/EREV proponents claim they MUST have an engine for backup. If I had to choose one or the other it's no contest. But if Ford finds a way to package the EREV well, and the engine maintenance cycling isn't that annoying, I would at least consider it. But I don't see that in the future.

Ha Ford, have you noticed that most Lightning owners are satisfied and aren’t enthusiastic about EREV? I’m guessing that EREV has a place, but for me, when my Lightning is near end of life, I would probably look for another pure EV truck or do a major overhaul of my Lightning.

Hmm, maybe Ford will offer a generator delete option. That might satisfy me!

We love our Lightning and will never go back to a dirty, polluting, noisy and maintenance money pit ever again.

I'd never go back to gas. Only fuel I burn is natural gas in my furnace. If it ever breaks it will be replaced with a heat pump.

Looking at EV9 at the moment. I doubt I make any move until early 27 though since I got an extended warranty.

Yes; ideally both EREV and BEV versions of the Lightning should be available. A build-to-oder option that: deletes the ICE genset, increases the usable EV battery into the 120-140kWh range, and adds a DC fast-charging port would be great.
