The other day I was headed out on a drive, was just about to get on the highway when I looked down at the instrument panel and saw the tailgate ajar indicator. There was no accompanying pop up warning. I was obviously concerned and pulled over to check my tailgate, worried that my stuff might have slidden out the back. But not only was nothing missing, the tailgate was still closed and secured.

So I pushed the release button to open it and it started to soft drop about 2/3 the way down before abruptly dropping open. Then when I tried to push the button to have it automatically close, nothing happened. I manually closed the tailgate and checked the dash to see the warning light gone. After this the power tailgate appeared to function normally.

Has anyone else had this problem? I also had an instance when the tailgate seemed to open on its own while I was sitting parked in a parking lot. This seems to only have started after the 4.1.2 update.

I’ve seen other weird behavior. Yesterday I pushed the the button on the tailgate and it opened normally but immediately beeped and started to close. I put my hand on it and it stopped and went back to open. When I was done I pushed the button again but it didn’t close so I closed it manually. The auto close tailgate is probably the second most useless feature after the gear shift lever.

Mine acts like it's closing then abruptly stops right before latching, beeps twice and opens. This happens a lot. I figured maybe my bed cover is confusing it. It's been cold so I haven't addressed it.

I've had this exact thing happening on mine. I figured the same, that sometimes when it kissed the bed cover, it sees it as resistance and reverts to open.

Hasn't been enough of a problem for me to troubleshoot yet.

I also think a pinching of a Bedrug in the tailgate gap might be problem for some of us. So, to keep the Bedrug over and out of the gap, I added a three foot, 3/16" fiberglass stick (from an electricians wire pushing / pulling kit) with thin tyraps threaded through the bed material. This gives me a way of pulling up the rug from getting caught in the gap and somewhat trains the material to stay out. Silly system, but works for now. Probably should just cut out that rug section and maybe put in the Ford tailgate dust seal.

edit 3-31-23: maybe a 2" cylinder of very soft foam, that can be crushed in the tailgate w/o causing a pinch problem, could fit under the rug at the gap?

I had the exact same experience this morning. I pressed the in truck button to lower it after seeing the warning indicator and it started to lower a bit and then free dropped all the way down. Pushing button on the tailgate itself would not raise it. I manually closed it and indicator turned off. When I tried using the button in the truck I was able to lower & raise as expected.

Also had this happen, yesterday morning. I noticed shortly after leaving my house in the morning. I pulled over and checked, the tailgate was closed. Hit button to open, let it go half way then stopped it and closed manually. Light gone, didn't think anything else of it. Very odd, I hadn't used it in weeks.

I haven’t seen exactly the same behavior, but have several occasions where the tailgate will not open or close with the button on the gate and I have to go to the dash or my PAAK to open or close it.

It’s flaky at best.

I have had this happen as well, including recently when I tried to lock the car, it honked at me and dropped the tailgate. I had to physically close it for the truck to lock. I've also had it show ajar on a few occasions where it exhibited the same behavior y'all have seen.

I didn't have a dash indicator, but when I dropped the tailgate on Saturday to do our weekly run to the transfer station, it went about halfway and then just dropped. I couldn't close it using the in cab button. Before I could get out and gently close it, my 5 year old "helped me" by slamming it shut. After that it worked fine using the on gate button and the one inside the cab. Can't help but wonder if it was related to all the recent software updates I've had.

I have also had the same glitch twice now. I agree that it seems to be happening after my last update. Before the update I have never had any problem. I have also had problems with my blind spot sensors and weird range estimates after the update.
