I'll agree. The once or thrice we used EC in the Atlantic Maritime provinces this past December & January on our Newfoundland trip, EC always reliably worked.
as someone that lives in the maritimes....ooof...coming here in december/january...especially the ones that just passed...that must have been a temperature shock haha

Haha indeed it was. Nothing two men can't handle, eh? A great place even with the Arctic blasts, especially because of the awesome friendly nature of Newfoundlanders.

"No moose or caribou were harmed in the execution of this trip."

Here's the write-up. Enjoy!

I'll keep that in mind. I used EA once as far as I can remember on the day I bot my truck in KC and it was the high price that I didn't like. It was at a shopping center and if I would have walked across the parking lot to a store, by the time I got to the front door, it would have been time to go back to avoid the extra charge for sitting there. I do remember the pretty girl in the Tesla next to me. The only time I ever saw a pretty girl in a Tesla even after stopping at a number of superchargers afterwards.

At least we have plenty of EA chargers around as an option. The bottom of my list is EVgo.

I think Bill knows this but the Tesla app always tells me if any of the Tesla supercharger stations aren't working at a particular place. It will say something like 2c and 4a or whatever aren't working. I have the Tesla app open. Nose in (taking up 2 slots) between two pedestals within inches to get close enough using the front camera. Usually get out to check the cord will reach and pull closer if needed. I click on the Tesla app to start the charger and then I put the adapter in the truck, plug into the adapter, and it starts charging. And for Bill, I'll be in touch later this Spring since we'll be headed back to Marysville, WA for a month this summer. SIL will transfer from Everett Naval Station this next winter so we will make the trip around the Olympic Peninsula. Starting from Port Angeles and on to Forks and around to the South. Then see how many bigfoot encounters we have. :)

I have nearly 200 billed EA charging sessions, and a literally countless number of failed ones since January 2023.

I have testified twice at CARB hearings on EA’s implementation of the Dieselgate partial consent decree. Both times I described EA as “the worst company in the US.” It utterly failed at the single job it had to do: Charging EVs. Of course, CARB refused to do anything meaningful to require performance/compliance.

Has EA gotten marginally better the last year or two? Yeah, probably, though I have shifted most of my business to Tesla. I also like the new iONNA stations.

Side note: After Elon fired her for doing her job, EA could have hired Rebecca Tinucci, the person most responsible for shaping Tesla’s superior charging network. Instead, they stuck with a VP for operations who is absolutely worthless.

This particular Tesla station in Silverdale, WA is normally so reliable that I just pull up and use P&C. I never look at the apps for this one until now because I plug in, go hit the restroom in Taget, come back out and hit the road to home. Only stop here for a 5-10% bump to make my last leg home with about a 10% buffer. Nice new stands with the long cord so normal parking and a restroom in the Target. I don't need to stop during the warmer months, mostly only when it's cooler out and driving with the wife which means one side of the climate system is turned up 76 and my side is 66...

All of the EA's that I have tried on this route to home are generally full or derated, a couple of cut cords, or just blank-screen broken. Cramped lots with with really tight access too, not ideal at all.

In my experience, the EA chargers have been my most reliable. Tesla, EVConnect, and BlueOval all tie for second place. All others do not even make the top 100.
I have never had an EA charger not charge.
The only beef I've ever had with EA is when the site in Sioux Falls doubled its cost. My Powerstrokes are cheaper to run if I have to use this one.
Teslas are few and far between.
EVConnects are very reliable but slow. (under 100 kW)
BlueOval is reliable but I always seem to have to ask the dealer to move an ice vehicle so I can charge.

You've got some terminology misunderstandings.

BlueOval Charge network is a collection of many companies under one label that allows you to charge your vehicle with the Ford app activating the chargers, and have it billed to the credit card you gave Ford.

There are chargers at Ford dealers. Some are part of Ford Charge, which is also part of the BlueOval Charge network. Others are various brands.

EA, Tesla, EVConnect, IONNA, and a bunch of other brands are all part of the BlueOval Charge Network.

Your note about the EA site doubling in price may be tied to the fact that in SD, EA used to charge by the minute, and then switched to charging by the kWh when they got permission to do so. Sioux Falls is currently 64 cents, which is the highest EA charges on their network. Becoming a member for $7 would lower that by 25%.

As with most people, your experience with chargers is location-specific. In many places, Tesla blows away EA in price and reliability. In others, Tesla barely exists. Most people avoid dealership chargers.

I think it may have been created to deliberately slow down the adoption of EVs. Hear me out:
  • It tends to fail in subtly irritating ways, like degraded service for one or two stations, and always during busy weekends or weather events
  • The stations themselves are located in busy parking lots, ensuring that non-EV bystanders have to see people struggling with the machines as they walk into Wal-Mart
  • Failures are rarely fixed in a reasonable time frame, leading to even more irritation on the return journey
  • The stations are expensive enough to dissuade 3rd-party operators from wanting to get involved
  • It's just good enough to string people along, ensuring that the small vocal minority of EV drivers will have complaints over the long term
  • But it's also not bad enough for people to demand an alternative
It also helps bring down NEVI with it, by being compliant to the letter of the law while failing to actually deliver a reliable nationwide infrastructure.

I'm aware of Hanlon's Razor. But the oil industry does a lot of shady things, and I'm not sure someone could have designed a better scheme to sandbag the EV revolution.
EA is a subsidiary of Volkswagon established in late 2016 by the automaker as part of its efforts to offset emissions in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Exactly the opposite experience here, though they certainly have had a rough patch.

EA has gone systematically site-by-site across the country replacing like 10 sites a week with new hardware, not to mention launching new and larger locations.

As someone with hundreds of EA sessions, I avoided them for over an entire year in 2024 and into 2025, but when I tried them again in 2025, they became my network of choice. Since restarting using EA in 2025, I've had literally zero failed sessions. Can't even say that for my experiences charging with Tesla.

That said, if they havent upgraded the site you're using, you do have a higher probability of having a bad time, but even then I noticed a huge improvement to how they've been maintaining their old sites too. The exact same locations I had horrible experiences with in 2023 were flawless in 2025.

Perception can lag reality.

Tesla's network of superchargers is the industry's gold standard. That network was created specifically to attract and support customers to their vehicles. Since they seem to have done rather well by that, they have now opened up their superchargers to EVs other than Tesla, and the rates being charged to non-Tesla drivers is at a bit of a premium. Good for them. EA would do well to mimic the Tesla service and maintenance standards.

I have used EA multiple times all has been good, except for that #&$@! Station at the Walt-mart in Gallup NM. I Saw a ID4 stuck on a EA charger in Payson AZ we but we got it released. Dispenser or VW issue? Actually guess they would both be a VW issue... Price a little high but they are a good back up if there is not a Supercharger available..

Just to add a possibly useless data point...Electrify Canada is pretty good in my experience. They've (knock on wood) always worked, and when it wasn't -10 or lower outside, I could consistently get 150kw on the lightning (and have hit 275 with my Lucid Air and previously with the Taycan). They are just somewhat expensive compared to others...but I always see Americans complain about EA but EC has been pretty good. Maybe it's just my experience though...
I think this might be a point favor of Big Oil Conspiracy. They know that internal combustion cars are finished in Canada, even moreso now that they're allowing Chinese imports. The USA is the last market they can maintain control over.

... I'm actually starting to believe this a little bit 😂

Granted, my data set is very small. My normal travels utilize EA at Bedford exit of PA Turnpike beside the Sheetz, Hagerstown at the Walmart and Sterling VA beside the Sheetz.
All have worked effortlessly with Blue Oval. If I have a complaint it’s that they are crowded during normal travel times and more expensive than Tesla chargers not far away. (Sunday afternoon saw all 6 chargers in use at Bedford).
We are in an interesting time where DCFC are still being constructed and coming on line. Just as EV sales are dropping. This should make distance travel easier.

I know both of these stations well (I like that I can shop at the Harbor Freight while charging in Payson). And I hate the angled/stacked/narrow EA dispensers at Gallup, too - they suck for Lightnings. Fortunately, there is a new iONNA station at Gallup and it is only 39¢/kWh.

Funny about the ID4. I was at an EA site in Williams (AZ) and an ID4 driver could not remove the charging plug. I quickly googled the problem and discovered that there was a fob press combination that released the charge port.

More on the same subject: Just last night, at a V3.5 station in Las Vegas, the Tesla charging plug would not release from the A2Z Pro adapter on my Lightning, which meant the whole assembly was stuck in the charge port. This is a VERY rare occurrence for me (and I do a HUGE amount of DCFC charging). After struggling with it for a few minutes, I opened the frunk, found the cable release for the charge port, and was able to remove the plug+adapter. Then, with a little "persuasion," I was able to remove the adapter from Telsa plug. Not sure what the problem was, but the Tesla plug looked like it had gotten a lot of use.

That's what I did. Googled ID4 charge release and came up with 3 quick hits on unlock button from the older gentlemens fob. Poor guy it was his first fast charge experience with his new VW.
I am just the opposite I charge 95% at home. If a trip is more that 400 miles or so I fly, but in this case I had multiple destinations, Scottsdale AZ to Waterloo Iowa Duluth Mn and Star Base Texas and back home. None of which had decent flight availability. Besides it had been 20 years since I did a long drive and I wanted to see if I still had it in me. So i took a SR Lightning Pro and did 4700 miles in 16 days which required allot of charging stops. Glad to hear about the new Ionna station. I stopped at two on my trip both were nice... I lived in Apex NC home of the first Ionna station but that was 20+ years ago.
