This sounds pretty good for fords next generation of electric trucks. On board generator to keep the truck battery charged for heavy loads and towing and long road trips. Sounds exciting. I’m glad ford is moving forward with this setup and I look forward to see the new f150 series electric truck line up. Who’s all in? I’m starting to save my hard earned money now… whoohoo ford built tough.

All I see is added cost to buy and operate. Added maintenance as well. Niche market and will likely flop harder than a fish out of water.

Yep. Funny thing is for the last few months I have looked at what’s on the road and I rarely see 150 gas trucks towing 10k pounds. It’s typically a 250 or 350. That’s in the northwest as well as middle of nowhere CA.
I honestly think ford Marketing shot themselves in the foot marketing the lightning as a tower’s dream. They set false expectations and set people up to be disappointed.

They should have had a chart that listed F150 power trains (including electric), and then for the box where the lightning row and the “long distance towing” column meet, there should have been a “NO”.

in other words that should have marketed the Lightning as just another F150 instead of a super F150.

I already have a hybrid (Escape PHEV).
It's already got the lawnmower engine to take over for the short range battery. Great for jetting around town on battery, but I hate the sound of that ICE kicking on!
And, of course, it probably couldn't tow anything to the end of the block!
So, not really a fair comparison, but sure sounds like a similar concept.
I bought my Lightning so that I could haul small loads or tow my boat a few miles. Works fine for that. Can't imagine using it for a real work truck.
Guess mine's a toy that goes really fast, really fast and really quiet. No generator for me!

No thanks, If I wanted a hybrid I'd have bought one.

EREV will have some niche clients. A good fit would be folks who tow campers long distances periodically, but don't do it all the time and want the full EV range most of the time.
I have no interest in the EREV. I tow, but not enough to worry about towing range. I only tow far enough to need a charge stop, 6-8 times per year and it is not worth the bother to carry the extra cost/maintenance for the generator. The reduced electric range of the EREV would be a worse hit for me for my normal driving. I'm more interested in the mid-sized truck that comes out of the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. I've had full-size pickups most of my life, but I might be ok to step down to a well-built mid-sized full electric now that I don't carry rear seat passengers as often.

You sound like the perfect audience for an EverDrive option on your Lightning.

Yeah, we had a plug in hybrid before and while an EREV isn't a 1:1 to a PHEV, the annoying parts of a PHEV remain. Still have oil changes, engine is almost certainly going to have to run at some point to "maintain" itself as it isn't good to let an engine just sit unused for months and months if you end up not needing it much. With our C-Max Energi my wife was able to get to work and home on the battery (in the summer) and at least once a week the engine would just run for maintenance, basically circulating the oil and that. So we not only had to fill it up with gas, but gas was burned just to maintain and engine we largely didn't need.

The EREV will be much the same for most people. Especially if the battery can provide at least 150 miles of range as an EREV should since it should be a more battery forward version of a PHEV. We would only use the engine when on really long road trips which would maybe be a couple times per year. So oil changes and fuel maintenance and all that.

I think it's great for people with travel trailers or who live in areas of the country with really long distances between charging. I certainly see the use cases for them. But to make it the only option is where they lose me. Make the EREV an option to the Lightning line, not the only way forward.

Hah, I'll pass on that headache. I'll just stop for the 1/2 hour and grab a coffee and maybe some lunch... It will be way less time and a lot less expensive than trying to load that into the bed and hook it up.

FACO (Ford always chickens out) . Three months ago I bought 2017 Ford fusion plug-in Hybrid , beautiful reliable electric/hybrid car unfortunately it was discontinued, I believe it would sell better then Camry, Honda, Hyundai sedans. The lightning also was piece of art and machinery (discontinued) and now another would be short lived truck?. It would be discontinued after a year, just stay tuned.

No EREV for me. Worst of both worlds. How good will the 'gas mileage' be when you are running a generator to create electricity for driving/towing?

(and you lose the quiet and no-smell aspects of our BEV)

I think those who are doing long distance towing would not bother with the Battery other than when they leave home. After that they will not go to the Gas Station and then to the Charge Station to get topped off. Just use the 550miles of Gas.

And when you aren't long distance towing now you only have (perhaps, guess, ~) 150 miles of battery???

Nope.

If Ford had come out with a EREV initially, I probably would have bot it, having driven Hybrids for 20+ years, and always longing that I could run on the battery longer. The EREV would have been handy for the multiple trips I've taken in the LER's, with the similar costs/mile with DCFC'ing, as a backup if nothing else. Especially prior to Tesla SC access.

One nice thing about the F150 EREV, is the Electric Lightning lives on.

There is the possibility that Ford can easily go back to BEV F150's when batteries evolve to solid state and are lighter. The packs will be cheaper to manufacture, and easily last 500 miles.

BEVs are the future.
