Coolant valve broken, no parts, buyback: Fix#92

I’m getting the sense that people at Ford are trying hard to make sure any further revisions fix the ongoing problems and that Ford is unwilling to sell knowingly defective parts.

The materials engineer needs a kick in the balls over this design!

My new 2025 Ford Lightning Pro came complete with a coolant leak from the coolant valve. Ford Part # MU5Z-8C513-D. The truck has been at the local dealer for 2 months now....... This part is backordered indefinitely.
I have tried everything, filed a case with customer service and just received approval for buyback.
I really like this truck, and I bought a bunch of accessories for it.
I can't find another 2025 Pro and I am incredibly frustrated that this part is not available for a new truck.
The stress is taking a toll on me, especially since I am short a vehicle for our family.
This is a $ 150 part that is keeping a $ 50,000 truck from operating.
I have bought an A version (MU5Z-8C513-A) for this truck, but was told that it is not compatible.
There is also a B and C version apparently and I saw that the installed valve is a MU5Z-8C513-CD.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I checked all the local junkyards and used parts business without success.

Is there anyone out there with 3D printing know how that can wade in on this?

Coming from someone that has been on the service side of high line dealerships for the better part of 30 years, this kind of situation is unfortunately now not uncommon. The backup from the Covid era was just barely clearing out, then the war in Ukraine put a hurting on supply chains, now exacerbated by a constantly changing tariff landscape that no one can plan for. Not making excuses, just offering explanations.

I'm in the business also. The manufacturers are constantly having to shutdown production even on new vehicles cuz they can't get the parts for the new vehicles. What the man says is true. It's not that they won't build the parts. It's just that they can't get the parts.

Sounds like we need to send up the batt signal to @Ford Motor Company on this one.
Clearly Ford doesn’t care he’s already approved for a buyback. Why would you try to hang on and keep a truck you can’t get parts for? It’s only been out of production less than a year and already you can’t get parts. What’s a matter if the law says they have to make parts, but they don’t make them. What does that do for you? It’s not gonna get better. It’s just gonna get worse. I’d cut my losses. Take the buyback and get something else something that is supported..

Yeap, this is pretty much what I expected from Fords 10 year "commitment". Worth as much as the paper it was written on in my phone.

This is exactly the situation . Ford doesn’t care. They washed their hands of this vehicle and clearly they are not supporting it as proof they offered an immediate buyback. That means they have no intention to making this thing anytime soon. And since it’s. Coolant leak not a stripped gear the Martin’s fix isn’t applicable to this valve .

I am hearing this more and more - people with Lightnings who need parts that Ford either can't (or won't) supply in a timely manner.

I'm waiting for a part for my truck (which is luckily an add-on) - but holy creepers. What is going on!?

I am wondering how long it will be before we start seeing aftermarket parts. I'm assuming the circuits inside are okay - just the actual valve mechanism that's shot?

Don’t hold your breath for aftermarket parts. They didn’t make a lot of these things. Remember, it doesn’t pay for the aftermarket to support a truck that was only made for a few years and didn’t sell many of.. aftermarket parts are made for good selling vehicles, or they can recoup the investment of manufacturing, not ones that didn’t sell very well.

With Ford abandoning the Lightning I'm glad I leased instead of buying. The truck is Awesome but the possibility of it becoming a paper weight scares me.

I was planning on either buying it out after the lease term or buying another used Lightning if the residual is too high. Now I think I will likely just give it back.

It's a shame. It does everything I need in a truck.

Just out of curiosity what kind of buy back did they offer relative to the MSRP for the truck you own. I haven’t had anything break yet that can’t be fixed, but I would like to know how well Ford is taking care of you or not on the buy out side.

It’s unfortunate and concerning that the lightning parts are unavailable. If I were you I’d absolutely take the pay back . There are several lightnings still available for sale. Good luck. Don’t get frustrated something beyond your control. It seems to me similar fate is awaiting to all of lightning owners. But meanwhile enjoy “while it moves”. “10 year guarantee supply”???!!!

Why not stick it in your truck and see what happens?

I had an old Peugeot (1968 403) back in the 1990s and occasionally had to stick a part from an earlier or later model on the car and cross my fingers.

If you want to keep the truck, get it back from the dealership and try these two thing in whatever order you prefer:
1) put in the replacement part you bought that is a different version;
2) try the fix in the video.

Find a local mechanic that is willing to do those procedures if you can't DIY them yourself.

Sounds to me like the dealership does not want to fix the truck, just wants you to replace it with something else and wash their hands of it.

If all else fails, take the buy back, but if it were me and I really wanted that particular truck, I'd try to find someone who would fix it.

There is a right to repair codified in law.

The only catch is, if you repair it as in 1 or 2 above and something goes really wrong because of that, kiss your warranty goodbye if they can prove the repair/replacement part caused a failure.

I had this happen on a Chevy Malibu couple years back over a 150 part because of supply chain and then a union strike. I ended up buying a new car since the Malibu had 200k miles. Waited 6 months for the part and then sold the Malibu. Total pain.

It's a tough one for sure.
I have a 2023 Pro and in my case, I'd try a fix if the valve goes, knock on wood!

Be brave and think it over, sleep on it, and then go with your gut.

On one hand, it feels like ford has given up and zero fucks are given about sustaining this platform, on the other, cybertruck guys are having their fair share of issues too (please do not respond with you feelings on Elon, they are irrelevant in this context). I’m staying put, truck runs and there do not appear to be better alternatives out there. It is what it is.

@SpaceEVDriver traded the Lightning for a Silverado EV. Last I saw, he had outlined positives and negatives in this thread. The Silverado may or may not be an option for OP, but it is an option if the buyback route is chosen.

This reminded me of the situation you had recently with an insurance company wanting to total the truck rather than repair it...persistence can pay off sometimes.
