I inquired, did the math on 2 electric cars ( 22MME 60k miles and 23lightning 33k miles) and decided to roll the dice and do nothing. Between the fuel cost and Maintenance cost savings and the warrantee monthly cost in a year I will have enough saved to do the repair. But I’m gambling that both vehicles make it to 200k with no repairs

After several electrical issues on my 2023 the first year (rain sensor, USB ports wire harness, brake controller...) on my 2023 I decided to go the Granger Ford route.

I will be buying my first warranty next year because of all the complexity of a new model, even as "simple" as a Pro, from Ford. Variable frequency inverters, dash screens, LEDs, so many digital modules, ...
Well, just two weeks ago I wrote this. Today I purchased a premium warranty from Granger.

The tariffs are apparently coming against our next door friends this week. I think Ford will be impacted in a big way. Part prices will eventually rise, forcing repair costs up. Good business practices will force the extended warranty prices upward also.

I was going to wait, because a life disaster or accident could come along before my 36 months are up and the need for an extended warranty disappear.

This current disaster isn't theoretical any longer, I acted before prices go up..

"Elbows Up" describes what is about to happen in Ford's immediate world here in America. I certainly hope this week is better than last week for all of us.

Good choice, just connecting any newer model vehicle to a dealer computer can be very pricey! Also to mention, the updates needed aren’t all going to be free.

I just recieved a letter from Ford warning me of my factory warranty ending soon. I've always heard of Granger on this forum. Is this still the best buy as far as extended warranty and how do I go about purchasing it?

Thanks.

I leased mine for 4/40k. I have ZERO intention of having this truck when warranty expires due to the extreme cost of battery packs and/or modules, electric motor units, AC to DC converter, the overly complex HVAC system, etc. Severe failures of a truck like this could destroy a man's savings account quickly out of warranty.

However, when I looked at the Ford EV extended warranty pricing, the problem is that the more affordable year/mileage plans don't really cover much that isn't already covered, and the plans that would protect me beyond factory warranty get pricey very quickly.

So, I have time to think about it. But most likely the end of 3/36 will be the end of this truck in my driveway. Wildcard is if this truck ends up being flawless over the next 3 years and I fall deeply in love with it....in that case I might buy an extended warranty before the deadline and roll the dice.

Yes, unless you’re in FL or CA, Granger and Flood are great options and were the cheapest when I was researching warranties. Just sign up online, takes just minutes.

I to bought 10 years, 100k from Granger. I probably only needed 75k but I wanted to have extra miles on there in case I sell the truck in a few years. I too am recently retired and I wanted the peace of mind to not have to worry about anything on this truck. I've owned the ERL since May 2022 and I love it (as does my red Lab!)
I was in the same boat. I'm not concerned about the drive train as much as driving a computer. The 1st 15K I had numerous electricals go out (not drive train related) so I went the Granger route. At 25K the A/C TXV went out, what next? Granger was simple and quick. No regrets. I'll be shocked if I don't use it.

To be clear though, the expensive items you mentioned are all covered under the factory 8yr/100,000 mile warranty and there is no extended warranty you can buy for those parts.

The 3yr/36,000 mile warranty covers everything else and is what you can extend. For that the choice is extend it or buy a new car that has a warranty, but those costs are more or less the exact same costs you would have with any new vehicle, EV or ICE.

and, there is no such thing as an extended 'warranty' ... as you can clearly see on the Ford brochure, it is a 'SERVICE PLAN'. EVs rarely ever need any service.

My so-far successful plan has been to invest the cost of any extended anything into my retirement account instead of paying for the extended service plan/warranty/GAP insurance/scam-of-the-day.

So far, after 30-ish years of not wasting money on these kinds of expenses, I’ve made enough “extra" in those particular investments to be able to retire a year or two earlier than I might have. I’ve had no major losses related to items where these extra costs were offered.

That's just the words they used to call it. They sell two different plans, one is for service, things like oil changes etc, typical ICE related things, then there's the other which IS an EXTENDED warranty. Why you have trouble comprehending that fact is beyond reason or explanation except the fact you're not doing your do diligence in READING the details, You're making an assumption based solely on a name.

I worked for Ford for 11 years as a dealer line tech and have repaired plenty of peoples vehicles under that very ESP (EXTENDED WARRANTY) just about on a daily basis, I've seen those ESP's pay for everything from a complete new engine, transmission, a/c system etc... all paid for by the Ford ESP.

Please take the time to learn the difference.

I rolled the dice and decided to pass on any extended warranty. My 22 MME already has 67k miles and my 23Lightning has 46k miles, and most extended warranty’s don’t go past 110k miles. When you consider the cost of extended warranty on 2 vehicles, and the money saved due to fuel and maintenance savings, I can probably cover one major repair. 2 repairs will be pushing it. But that’s why it’s a gamble! In another 3 years I will know if I made the correct decision! I am likely to drive both vehicles 200k miles. As I approach 200k miles I have the option to just walk away from it if a major repair is required because it won’t owe me anything .

I’m an optimist!

Right, which was sort of my point. The inexpensive plans don't really cover much that isn't already covered, and the ones that would get very pricey.

I honestly think that these Ford plans are better investments when buying used, because in that case the warranty begins at date of used purchase, and not date of FIRST purchase, in which case it becomes very useful. Example: The truck I traded for this lightning was a F-250. I bought it at 81k miles on the odometer and 5 years of age. I purchased a Ford ExtraCare ESP for $2,400. Over the next two years and 24,000 miles that extended warranty covered a $3,000 oil pan leak repair and a $800 BCM replacement plus labor. The warranty was still in effect for another 2 years and 24,000 miles if I hadn't traded the truck. I could have elected to buy longer coverage that would have covered the truck beyond 150k miles.

Seems that there is no way to do that on a new Lightning purchase.

Oh there definitely is an extended warranty, and if buying used it's an excellent thing to purchase.
