$69 EV Registration Fee. Increases are annoying. What about your state?

California went from $0.00 as an incentive to go electric. To $100. And now $200. For the electric add on fees.

Add in the weight fees for commercial registration and the registration fees, this adds up to over $1000. In registration alone.

Sales tax on the truck is based on your county, Los Angeles is 9.5%.
On a purchase of 50k you pay $4750 on sales tax alone plus all the registration fees.

On a lease, you pay all the registration fees, but only a percentage of the sales tax depending on the terms and residual value percentage. So if the residual is 65%, you pay 35% of the sales tax.

Yes, owning a commercial vehicle with additional weight fees is not cheap.
Add in insurance cost in California, cost of living in California and now the cost of rebuilding after the wildfires that ultimately we will be playing for with added taxes, insurance rates, ect. Please think twice before you decide to move here.

Federal taxes are 18.4 cents a gallon for gas 24.4 cents for diesel and Texas adds $.20 a gallon for either. Texas $200 registration fee for EV’s equals about 521 gallons of gas if you include both state and federal tax, 450 gallons of diesel. If you just include the $.20 state portion of the fuel taxes then it is 1000 gallons. I think most of the states have just decided to earn some extra money when it comes to EV‘s. Because that is probably twice what it should be!

Basic math tells me that 1000 gallons is roughly 38 fillups in my previous ICE f150 or about 3 times per month from empty to full. I was doing 1/2 that.

Annual fees

• 5,999 lbs. or below: $130 for EVs and $70 for PHEVs
• 6,000 lbs. to 10,000 lbs. $190 for EVs and $100 for PHEVs
• 10,001 lbs. to 26,000 lbs. $340 for EVs and $210 for PHEVs
• Greater than 26,001 lbs. $1,100 for EVs and $700 for PHEVs

The revenue from these fees goes to the highway restricted account.

Starting July 1, 2028

Today, I registered our Tesla with the state of Colorado, and there seems to be an increase in EV-related fees. When I first registered an EV in 2020, it was a single $50 fee. This year, it's $69 divided between two fees. I understand that states traditionally use gasoline taxes to pay for roads and maintenance. My economics mind likes how the taxes on gas are efficiently applied; you drive more, use the roads more, buy more gas, and pay more taxes.

EV taxes are flat-rate, which is the most annoying part as a driver who doesn't drive a lot. Yes, I can afford it... and in Colorado we get a state tax break when we purchase an EV... but just let me complain ?

Here's Colorado's breakdown of registration fees for our 2020 Tesla Model 3. My new Lightning in 2024 rang in at an eye-watering $1213! Ironically, EV drivers still pay a fee for "Emissions" programs.

Here in North Carolina the registration fee has gone up considerably. It’s almost $200. We also pay a tax on our vehicles every year based on the value of them. They claim we do not pay tax on the pump. However, we pay a sales tax on the electricity when we charge at home. I believe that 7%.

Oddly enough, this is the plate renewal for our 2022 Mach-E. A vehicle that weighs less, and cost less to purchase. Makes no sense.

The discrepancy is probably because Michigan bases the license fee on the base configuration. A base Lightning in 2022 was $40k, while a base Mach E was higher. I'm also not sure we didn't get base F-150 pricing instead of using the Lightning Pro. Helps offset the gouging for the Lightning being an EV, at least.

Maryland is going to start charting EV taxes/surcharges when we do our every-2-year registration renewals. I think it's going to be around $250 or maybe higher by weight. Regardless, I'm fine with it. While I don't enjoy paying taxes, since I'm not buying gas at the pump, I haven't been-- and am not currently-- paying gas taxes that go toward state infrastructure. So I think it's only fair that I have to pay something sometime toward infrastructure.

You can't have common services like road repairs, bridge repairs, etc., without taxes.

Here is NJs...this is on top of the normal registration fee that based on vehicle class and/or GVWR.

Electric Vehicle Fee

• Under New Jersey law effective July 1, 2024, zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) are subject to an annual fee in addition to the existing registration fee. The additional fee applies to any vehicle certified as a ZEV pursuant to the California Air Resources Board ZEV standards for the applicable model year. The additional fee is payable in full at the time of initial registration and at every renewal. Beginning July 1, 2024, the annual fee is $250. The annual fee increases $10 per year for four years thereafter. For new ZEV registered, four years of the additional fee is due at the time of four year registration. For example, for new ZEVs registered between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the additional fee due and payable at the time of initial registration is for the years 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027.

GA has a $210 registration fee. For $35 more you can also get an Alternative Fuel Tag,
that give single-occupant carpool lane access and toll free express lane access.
Sucks, but we’ll worth it.

Back when GA was offering an EV tax credit, the State was rewarding you for buying a EV, then penalizing you for having it. Gubm’t at it finest.

Now it just penalizes you.

I dont have a problem paying the added fee to cover the gas tax. My problem is then the governor decides to pause the gas tax like has done so very frequently. ICE vehicles pay zero tax, while we continue to pay it yearly.

$200 in PA for 2025. Then $250 in 2026.

I bought the 2 year option in PA, it will be interesting to see if they will charge me for 2025 when my registration is up in 2026. Also I’m retired and don‘t put on any miles compared to when I worked.
We have a state inspection that records the mileage yearly , in my opinion that is what the state should use for the road tax.

No special fees in Massachusetts .... yet!

No special fees, but the excise tax still seems like Maura’s hand rummaging around my pocket (not in a good way ?). I know it’s paid to the town, but it’s a state program. Excise tax on my lease for three years is about $3400.
