80A Charging Cable Under Garage Door

I've done some searching here already, but didn't really find any answer to this specific question. I'm considering getting the Grizzl-E Ultimate 80A EVSE, provided my electrician confirms we have the "electrical" room to install one. Otherwise, it'll have to be a 48A EVSE. I'm currently using the Level 1 EVSE that came with the truck and running the cord under the garage door. Will the larger 80A cord fit under the door with no problems? Is the 48A cable the same size? If not (assuming it's smaller), does it fit fine?

I'd love to pull into my garage, but as someone recently posted (WXman? WeatherMan?) it's possible by maybe 2 inches clearance. And that's from wall to door. I'd have to do some decluttering to have a clear wall. Also, I don't want to mount outside on the brick and in the elements. So for now, I have to operate on the assumption that charging outside with the cable under the door is the way it will be.

Before I installed my Grizzl-e (outside), I ran the included Ford mobile charger under my garage door. It was enough to kick the garage door opener safety and re-open the door. I had to disconnect the door opener and just set it down gently on the cord until my I installed my EVSE.

Like you, there just isn't enough room
In the garage for the lighting.
I don't like not being able to close the garage door all the way. I drilled a hole through the exterior wall into the garage, and simply routed the charging cable outside, while keeping the charger inside. Incorporated a couple of RV ports so the drilled holes are nice and clean and nothing can crawl in or out. Works great.

Had mine mounted outside as it's weather resistant, next to my carport. Yeah I know I need to wash the side of the house, the north side always gets algae growth.

That's interesting that the included mobile charger cord was getting kicked back by your garage door. Mine tolerates it just fine. I'm guessing that might be a "downforce" adjustment on the garage door opener. I haven't seen if one of my neighbors with a Tesla charger is able to run one of their 48A cables under the door or not. Don't know anyone with an 80A. Hell, I don't even know any Lightning owners.

I have the Ford pro charger that does the 80amps. The cable is much thicker then j1772 level 2 but that is because the pro unit has ccs connector for the back feeding of power to your home. I'm not sure how thick the grizzl e cord is. However you should be able to adjust the down force on your garage door to keep it from kicking back up on the cord and closing tight enough where the rubber seals will still close the door sufficient enough to keep the bugs and debris out. I have also seen a device that can be used in the corner on the door to cut the gasket enough to fit the cord thru I just didn't want to do anything permanent to my door. I will up load a pick next time I charge.

(I wish I could fit in the garage but for now keeping the charger inside and truck outside has been working just fine.)

Mine is mounted inside and I run the cable under the closed garage door to the truck outside. The garage isn’t long enough to accommodate the truck so the box is mounted just inside the garage door.

I had a new garage door motor installed and I had the tech calibrate the closed point to leave a 1 inch gap to accommodate the cable.

To many threads on this already. Just instal an “UnDor”, and you have your solution.
I had searched and seen a few different options that people were doing, but no one had specifically addressed an 80A. I was hoping it wouldn't matter, to be honest. The solution you suggested seemed like a good idea. Apparently, thanks to current economic policies, they are no longer shipping to the US. :(

Think of electrical cables like water hoses.... If you kink, smash, crush, or tightly bend a hose, you cause more friction and the flow of water can become reduced.

Similar with electrical cables, especially when you are moving 48 or 80 amps worth. The difference with the electricity however is that instead of reducing the flow, the "friction" creates heat. If the cable is covered by extra protection, or smushed by your garage door seal, that spot of heat can become a real hot spot that causes insulation to become soft or melt, which then causes small pinholes that allow current to flow between the wires with different potential (ie. legs of the hots, or hot to neutral or ground), which creates a short circuit and more heat, etc, etc... Bam, you have a fire started from "electrical origin".

Best to just have your charger professionally installed and inspected on the outside of your house if you can't fit the truck in your garage. The chargers are made to survive the outside just fine.

The only thing that matters is the diameter of the cable and whether it fits in pocket the indoor creates. I believe I posted a picture of my setup in this forum.
Thank said, the install itself should be done by a professional. My only point is that you can keep the charger inside and charge the truck outside very easily.
