Based on how owners are charging on the go, Ford is enhancing the FordPass app experience and turning off the in-vehicle Charge Assist/Public Charging app starting today.

How you can find, activate, and pay for a charger.

  • FordPass App – your FordPass app is the easiest and quickest way to locate, activate and pay for charging at all 14 BlueOval Charge Network partner networks.
    Activate the BlueOval Charge Network

  • Plug & Charge – Just plug in at Tesla Supercharger (adapter needed) and Electrify America charging stations and charging will begin automatically, using your BlueOval Charge Network account for payment.

  • In Vehicle – Through the in-vehicle screen, you can continue to enter your trip details and route to a charger using Connected Navigation. You can also use Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay and Google Maps EV Routing for Android Auto.

Here’s how the Charge Assist/Public Charging App will change:

If you have a BlueOval Charge Network account and open the in-vehicle Public Charging app you will see:

Ford F-150 Lightning Changes coming to Charge Assist / FordPass App 1748529653219-1t

If you do not have a BlueOval Charge Network account and open the in-vehicle Public Charging app you will see:

Gotta love it. Introduce an app in the vehicle. Rename the app and cause confusion. Enhance it. Then, delete it.

The amount of energy they waste on this stuff, vs. giving us what we want (turn on preconditioning to ANY charger in my 2022 please, 2 winters now without it).

I just checked mine and it hasn't changed yet. Based on those pics it looks like you can still search for chargers like before (and hopefully see live status)? Is the only change removing the capability to activate a charge on the screen?

@TaxmanHog, I’m curious, not that I mind at all, but how did you get this info from Ford? Aren’t these posts usually created by the admin account or our illustrious AI friends from @Ford Motor Company? With the recent cuts, maybe they don’t exist anymore?

I receive heads up communications from the 'Digital Engagement' team at Ford, I usually don't post the alert because ADMIN has already done it by the time I review the email and am in a position to make a post.

Now they just need to integrate Tesla/EA charging subscriptions into the BlueOval network. Until then plug and charge will remain turned off for the foreseeable future.

Interesting. I just completed a 5,500 mile Texas to California and return towing a trailer & returning from Oakland CA with a '74 VW Karmann Ghia. I used the Public Charging feature to alert the truck as well as assist in navigation to Tesla & EA stations. Occasionally, not but consistently, would see the HVB inlet temps drop as we neared the chargers. Don't use the Ford Plug & Charge. Did notice faster charging rates than in the past (2022 ER Lariat, my 2023 hasn't gotten that update yet).

Oh great. I just dropped my phone and broke it, need to charge and now can't because I need my phone to activate the charger.

Oh great I'm in an area where my cell companies signal is void and the lightnings system would work but now I can't activate the charger to release the handle.

This was also discussed in tonight's turn down for watt podcast.

This right here! I tend to use Tesla Superchargers exclusively and subscribe to the better rate plan for long trips. I would love if I didn’t have to get my phone out and log into the Tesla app to initiate charging, but doing so saves me money. If they handled this, it would be pure charging bliss.

Plug & Charge is only one part of BlueOval Charge Network though - FordPass can be used at all 14 network partners instead of 14 separate apps - and the vast majority of those networks don't have any subscriptions at all to juggle.

But if they do, like Tesla and EA it is a lot cheaper for long trips to use the subscription. It would be nice for them to support this with BlueOval.

Just encouraging folks to think outside the two big players. Sure, getting that EA discount to buy the price down to $0.48/kWh sounds great, but when there's a ChargePoint or a Ford Charge or a FPL EVolution or a FLO or a [insert network here] and their walk up price is $0.30/kWh (or whatever), some folks would probably take the lower price on non-EA/Tesla networks.
