Also, many people have a trip where they're heading from point A to point B. That's very different from a trip where the trip is the adventure, i.e. towing a trailer, let's drive XXX miles a day or so, and see stuff. On the former, I want to be at point B on day 2 at 5PM. On the latter, whatever.

Since we use hotels and don't camp, I pick where I want to end each day, usually before dinner, with a brewery that just happens to be nearby.

Let me rephrase then. I've read the stuff that Ford published about you, and it's clear that you want to experience the good, and the bad, that customers do when charging. No idea whether this is part of your job, or just of interest to you, but clearly you are on the road a lot doing this.

Most people don't want to experiment - i.e. if there is a charger than is cheaper and faster, they want to use it. On a trip, I use level 2 only at night at a hotel, and only if it makes economic sense. Or if I'm visiting a place and they have one like a museum, or a downtown. I also don't stop for long lunches on the road, we pack our meals and eat while charging.

Experimenting, and finding a bad experience, would not be on the top of my list. That's why I read the PlugShare reviews and avoid bad locations.

If Tesla would only open up just one of the superchargers they have near me I'd be happy, there must be at least 40 of the damned things between the 3 different locations and not one of them can be opened up to other vehicles? There are a lot of Tesla's down here I grant you that but not so many they fill every stall all the time, matter of fact, every time I've gone by there, it's rare to see more than 6 of them charging at any one time.

I've got the Tesla app and have looked but cannot find a way to contact them to inquire about this.

The problem is that much of the Tesla network has been around for a while. In New Orleans, there are 2 chargers in town, both old 150kW, and one northeast of town, that is the same. 150kW chargers cannot communicate with CCS.

Tesla has been updating locations, surely on a need-basis. Given that if you're driving to New Orleans you PAA compatible chargers, because I-10 is chock full of them, there's clearly less of a need for them to upgrade just to service non-Teslas. I can't imagine New Orleans is a hotbed of CyberTrucks needing faster charging either.

Perhaps it's a time of use thing where it's based on a profitability per kWh. I usually have rates at about $0.03-$0.05/kWh, but yesterday it was $0.48 for one hour. If they just program the unit to say they need to make 4x the current cost, maybe that's how they're getting something like that.

Neither would I. Just got this truck a month ago and scoping out charging sites in my area. There's only 1 fast charger close by @ 120kWh for $0.69/kWh.

I don't travel much at all so it's not a big deal, I have a FCSP at home as well as the L1/L2 cable they included with the truck. With 300 mile range it'll get me any where I want to go as any farther of a trip, I'm flying.

We’re putting in 2 dual port 80 amp ChargePoint units J1772-NACS compatible with longer cables to serve 4 pull through lanes at one of our high easy access sites. A $50K+ install.

Four DCFC chargers plus $$$ transformer installs would push just shy of a $1/2 million. A colleague just put in 5 ChargePoint dual ports for his city and decided to charge $0.12/kWh which is double our utility district $0.06/kWh rate. A typical 20/40 kWh charge for me would cost $2.40/$4.80. We rather have more people charge and cover some of our costs than have a few charge at exorbitant rates.

Trying to get their investment back I suspect as quickly as possible. Installing DCFC is expensive, tough to do for independent dealerships that don't expect a ton of charging traffic.

Not sure I can defend that pricing, but to a point I can understand it. Could also be like a contractor giving you an insane quote for a job they don't really want to do, but in this case maybe they don't want the general public hogging their only DCFC so they put a "go away" price on it.

Keep in mind, ChargePoint is not like other CPO's (EA, EVgo, etc...). They only sell the equipment and SW to run it. Everything else is up to the site owner.



Like @RickLightning just mentioned, only time I've considered a dealer site was when I visited family in El Paso. I arrived at low SoC and we wanted to go to lunch the next day at La Mesilla (great Mexican food!) just south of Las Cruces. I had enough to get there but not get home. So I left an hour earlier than the rest so I could stop at a dealership in Las Cruces that had a free 50kW charger. I had a good chat with my FIL who was new to the EV scene and then met the rest of the family and had a great lunch.

In general, 50kW chargers would be fine for places like movie theaters or grocery stores where people are already lingering for extended periods of time. Not super useful when you have to out of your way/are in a hurry.

Las Cruces now has a Tesla Supercharger station just off I10 and Motel Blvd exit. I've tested it and easy access and charge rates 120-150 kwph.

Dealerships can charge a new vehicle to 100% just fine with a level 2 charger.

We have several dealers (all GM) doing the $2/minute on 50 kw chargers. The “reasoning” given is they are only for dealership use - however anyone with plug and charge gets screwed if they didnt check on app.

These dealers I can tell really hate EVs so it was likely a forced install by corporate - the only good thing is 99% of the time they have ICE vehicles blocking them anyway.

However for the poor SoB looking and seeing a DC charger and thinking great! Its a rude awakening.

My local Genesis dealer had free charging for about 2 months on 60kW chargepoint units. Lasted not too long and they freaked out ICE'ng out the chargers with a bunch of dealer vehicles, and posted signs saying "THIS WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A FREE CHARGER, FULL CHARGES WILL COST $45+ DOLLARS"
Funny thing was they didn't even need to ICE the charger because they were set to unavailable.

It just made me chuckle how they freaked out.
Snuck in and still charged for free. LOL
