He’s my neighbour so no, no “alarm bells”. But obviously enough of a question to post on here for opinions.

Sipes look okay. That cracking in grooves is minor but still there.
A winter of slush and slick roads? Probably.
I wouldn’t count on them for snow of any appreciable depth.

I normally get 3-4 years out of snows. Mount them mid November and off by mid April. As a creature of habit, that was the legal use period for studded tires In Pennsylvania.

I wouldn't pay $400 for those. Way too worn down.

Good tire when brand new; I have them on my truck now. Those will be fine for 1 season of dry winter or damp roads; I wouldn't trust them in slush or any depth of snow. Not worth it unless they come on rims. You'll be on the market for new tires next year and at least you'll have winter rims to put the new tires on in 2026.

I never cheap out on tires. They're the only things connecting you to the ground. No amount of brake upgrades, ABS, TCS, driver assists will replace the friction between a good set of tires and the ground. Also saw one too many 'financially efficient' friends go for off-brand/China-brands to save a buck only to have the beads fail or experience a blow out.

I don't see how they got that much wear in 2 seasons. If you ran them all year maybe but they look like they have 30 k on them. Hard pass

You guys have winter tires in Cali?

I have been snow skiing in California, and they regularly used chains on the tires, it's a big state.

I know this tire very well. I’ve used X-Ice 6 years on my RWD BMW 335i. No, these used tire are not worth it. These are at the very end of their useful life. Part of the magic of these tires is their tread depth. You don’t really use the wear bars as a metric as the majority of the siping will be gone before you get to the wear bars. No siping = no grip in snow.

I know new ones are expensive, but bite the bullet and get them. You will be much more safe.
