Home Backup Power, Right in Your Driveway
Mark, you drive more than a truck. It can also help be a backup power source for your home. Since your F-150® truck has a 240‑volt Pro Power Onboard™* outlet, you’re already driving a potential mobile power source. Now, Ford has partnered with GenerLink to use that power to help keep your essential home systems running during outages.** We’re excited to share this innovative solution with you, as one of a select group of F‑150® owners in Maryland.

Instead of running extension cords to a few appliances, a GenerLink switch transfers power from your truck directly to your electrical meter — powering your home’s outlets and installed systems through a single cable connection.

Put your power to work.

Simple: One connection does it all — no extension cords through doors or windows.

Cost: You already own the power source. GenerLink starts at $1,100, plus installation.

Powerful: Power your outlets, lights, and critical systems wired to your meter — like your furnace or security system — simultaneously (depending on combined wattage demand).
*See Owner’s Manual for important operating instructions. Use of GenerLink transfer switch may be subject to local utility provider approval.
**Available on Ford F‑150® PowerBoost Hybrid engine with available 7.2kW Pro Power Onboard and F‑150® Lightning models with available 9.6kW Pro Power Onboard. See Owner’s Manual for important operating instructions.

Availability is very limited. Looks like it has expanded to a few more states since last time it came up though, so hopefully it will spread quickly -

Even in states shown, availability can depend on which utility you have.

Yep. My utility (Pepco) won't allow the cheap/easy version yet.

Here's the email when I inquired:

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in the Ford GenerLink Transfer Switch—a safe, reliable solution for connecting a portable generator to your home during power outages.
While some utility providers have specific requirements regarding installations directly behind the meter, GenerLink offers flexible solutions to meet a variety of utility guidelines. In your area, Pepco - (MD) does not currently support meter-based installations, but we’re pleased to offer an alternative installation that works around these restrictions while still delivering the full benefits of GenerLink and your Ford Truck.
Meter-Adjacent Installation: A Smart, Utility-Compatible Solution
This alternative setup uses a secondary meter can, installed beside your existing meter. It’s designed to meet utility requirements while maintaining the safety, convenience, and whole-home flexibility GenerLink is known for.
Key Benefits:
  • Simplified Installation– No changes needed to your home’s internal wiring, making installation faster and less disruptive.
    • Cost-Effective – Avoids the need for separate transfer switches or critical load panels.
    • Built-In Safety – GenerLink offers optional surge protection and includes backfeed prevention to ensure safe, code-compliant use
    • Whole-Home Versatility – Power different areas of your home by flipping breakers—no fixed circuits.
    • Long-Term Reliability – Backed by a 7-year warranty for peace of mind.
    • Utility-Compatible – Designed to work with utilities that don’t support meter-based installations.
Easy Financing Now Available
We’re excited to announce that Meter-Adjacent GenerLink units are now available for purchase online, and you can now choose installment payments through Shopify Payments GenerLink Hybrid Transfer Switch System—making it easier than ever to own a GenerLink. Whether you prefer to pay upfront or spread payments over time, we offer flexible options to fit your budget.
Installation Support
We recommend working with a licensed electrician for installation. To make the process smooth, we’ve included detailed installation literature to guide them every step of the way.
If you have any questions or need help choosing the right setup, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Just reply to this email or reach out to our team—we’re happy to help!

The meter-mounted option looks attractive. I'm not into the meter-adjacent installation, that's a toss-up with other transfer switches. I guess every month I don't install some other transfer switch is another month this might become an option.

Edit: They're said they're working on approval with Consumers Energy in Michigan but don't have a timeline. I won't hold my breath but hopefully they can work it out sooner rather than later.

Yeah, this is weird...I went to the website and put in my zip and selected a name for my electric utility that I believe is what they're called (or very close) and it said I was approved....I'm in Alabama. I didn't see Alabama in that pull-down list posted above...and I can't even find that pull-down list on the generlink website anywhere...

I'm gonna call my utility company to confirm they are good with this. I'm hoping the website knows the difference between Athens, AL and Athens, GA...cause they may be thinking I'm somewhere in Georgia instead. 🤷‍♂️

I need this for my garage....my house has a backup gen already. This would be LOT cheaper than another Generac generator.

My utility requires me to lease it from them for a measly $22.99 a month, plus $99.99 installation. It's called Surge Protection Plus, and it includes free replacement if it gets damaged by a surge or indirect lightning strike. Of course they spelled it "lighting strike". $5k per event surge warranty for appliances and $1,000 for electronics.

DTE sucks.

I (almost) guarantee that the little pigtail between the cable and the truck is just something that omits the ground connection.

I have solar+battery. If we get to the point where the battery gets below about 50%, I use an adjustable amperage battery charger that I run from the truck’s 240 V outlet. It provides 7.2 kVA to the house battery. That is usually enough to charge the battery while the whole house runs, and I get all the benefits of whole-home coverage even when the truck isn’t plugged in.

Consumers Energy is scheduled to approve the meter-mounted option the month after you install something else. ;)

Were you on the generlink site, on a page other than the Ford Owners page? The generlink is widely available, it's this special bundle with the ford adapter that is limited. I believe @Ford Motor Company said in a previous thread that it was a trial in just a couple of states at the time. It seems like they are slowly expanding it.

Saw this a few weeks ago. $1,699 with a 100ft cable for me (GA). $1,849 with the surge protection. Then whatever the installation fee is on top.

GenerLink and Ford have teamed up for this bundle for backing up the F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid. The bundle is purchased from the Ford site (and it's not the same GenerLink as they sell independently) not the general GenerLink site: https://shopgenerlink.com/pages/ford-owners and yes, the state list is expanding all the time.
