hey guys, I just replaced my shifter with rotary one and it works fine, but I see a very big flaw/safety issue. I am able to go back and forth between P, R, N and D without pressing the brake paddle and even while driving. I tried at very slow speed and it can easily go back and forth which is very dangerous. I could not do that with my other shifter or on my rotary shifter on my 2020 Explorer ST. Is it cheap ebay version of the shifter that I bought or is there no such locking/safety mechanism built in? Have you guys tried that or noticed that. Would like to know the experience specifically from the folks who purchased the OEM shifter directly from Ford.

No lock on the rotary shifter. If you are above a certain speed and rotate the know the dash will show a message something to the effect of "not able to select that gear at speed". So you can rotate till your hearts content but it won't actually shift the trans.

If you tried it while driving what were your results? If it shifted at speed I'm sure your trans would be in pieces at this point.

While parked, and no foot on the service brake, does the drive motor engage to reverse or drive immediately?

Yes, at low speed when I tried to go to R from D, it did engage and started reversing. So yes, if I do it at somewhat higher speed it would engage and shatter my trans.

My standard shifter does the same. I feel certain it is speed limited. Also there is no transmission to shatter.

There's many OEM rotary shifters out there, but mine (E-Transit version) is locked until you press the brake pedal. (you can hear and feel the solenoid activate)

Inverse inductive reactance is all that's happening switching between drive & reverse, think of it as a counter force to the intended direction of motion.

The park pawl logic should prevent high speed engagement, I've not tested the theory for fear of "Failed Ford Logic", anyone want to be a guinea pig?

Unknown quality parts will do unknown things....

The bottom line with any modification to your truck is that you are putting a part in a place that your truck was not designed for. User assumes all responsibility and all risk.

Scan your part number against this thread, to see what you're dealing with (based on description, a non-motarized version).

This is a complete non-issue for the reasons @Mal106 correctly points out. There is no transmission and the software prevents you from doing anything that would harm the truck. Shifting from D To R at low speeds does not harm the truck.
