Just to add on to the complaints. In Southeast FL what I find is most of the EA chargers are in very dense areas and only have 4 stations or so. In fact there is one south of Miami that is at an outdoor mall area and they only have 4 stations, where as literally right next to them there's like 20 Tesla stations. I haven't been down there since Tesla opened to more than just Ford, but when I was, there was a line for the EA stations and one of them was broken. There was 4-5 Tesla stations utilized. This is the biggest issue I have with EA. Even in my hometown they are outside a mall (that is still used) and only 6 stations and they are always full. If they would have had a minimum of 10 per location, people wouldn't complain about 1 station being out of service.
Side note, I've been noticing GM doing the same, only installing 4 stations where they really need 8-10. Thankfully whenever Tesla goes into an area, it seem to be a minimum of 8 or 12, although I rarely see less than 16.

My experience is that EA reliability seems to have improved in the 18 months. Also while plug and charge is convenient, if you are charging more than once a month, you really should spring for a Tesla and/or EA membership as the first 10-80 charge pays it off. But you do have to then start your charge session from the respective app. Either one lets you cancel your monthly subscription when you don’t need it and then resubscribe when you do.
That's what I do (italics are mine) on every long trip. it saves a good penny.

My area has better access to Tesla Superchargers and one EA within a 15 minute drive. No complaints but rarely am able to get a spot to charge; along with the few stations available near me, I’ve yet to see more than 4 EA Superchargers in one spot. No complaints in function or service but the price can be more competitive. If they had non-peak rates I’d likely use them more but even a member rate of $0.42 near me, all day, isn’t appealing . It’s only convenient when my kids want to go to the play place at the mall and I happen to snag a spot.

The thing everyone needs to remember about EA having 4 chargers inost cases, is that there were very very few non Tesla evs on the road until they had already rolled out most of their network. Plus chargers of that power were new and extremely expensive. So 4 it was. I do know of a long established 6 charger station in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. That station has always been flawless in the just over two years I've had my truck. Other stations in NE Oklahoma and NW Arkansas, not so much. They seem to fail most often in peak summer heat this region.

In my cross-country experience, EA usually (not always) has six stations in one spot. Sometimes it has eight... less commonly but still often enough, it has only four. Very rarely, I've seen locations with a dozen+.

in my experience I’ve only ever seen one 6 stall EA and 4 is way more common.

To answer the question in the title, definitely not.

Is EA prefect? Nope. Have they made gobs of strategic, site layout, operational, and pricing blunders? Absolutely. But the trend is in the right direction. And with real competition from not only Tesla, but now Ionna also, that trend will need to continue to improve if EA wants to stay in business.

That is a much more germane question to my mind, is whether EA wants to be in the game long term, or cash out by being bought out. After the Walmart announcement, the latter seems pretty plausible to me.

I don't know where You are located (no avatar location). Yes, it varies... I drove cross country and on other long trips so my experience is the one I can refer to. And, btw, it keeps getting better and better which is a really nice trend.

It would really make more sense for Walmart to start their own charging network like they have for cell phones with Straight Talk. Out near the gas stations for the stores with gas stations would be the first place to start. They could corner the market if they don't penalize you for sitting there while in the store shopping such as give you an hour after the charge is complete.

Walmart is building out their own charging network. This map shows the general locations but because it’s zoomed out some pins are actually multiple locations. For example there is one pin by the blue dot (me) but there are actually three locations represented. If you check @tommolog State of Charge YouTube channel he has several videos about Walmart‘s plans.

And they're using Alpitronic units.. which are beasts. Can't wait til it's just a matter of finding a Walmart.

I've gone about half cross country, and you're totally correct -- it's improved _dramatically_ over the past 1-2 years.

I am travelling from South Jersey.

Been as far as VT, FL, and MO on electrons.

As stated, it's very variable. Clearly 4 is the norm. However, as they upgrade sites, they sometimes add more. I think the largest EA I have charged at was 12, and we were the only vehicle. The smallest was 3, with a level 2 over in another part of the lot, also EA (California).

Anyone who has driven these past few years knows that EA has dramatically improved. That said, they almost always (but not always) are more expensive than Tesla, in our experience.

IONNA is hopefully the future of charging.

So what's the difference between IONNA units and Walmart's Alpitronic units? Thanks.
