Had church this morning (7/19), charged the lightning to 90% overnight. Unplugged and started the truck, Got a big error message, ”stop safely Now” in the dash.

I shut the truck off and tried restarting it again several times, got the same message.

Got the error
Ford F-150 Lightning Stray electrons strike again 1784485517507-tt
and
Ford F-150 Lightning Stray electrons strike again 1784485517538-hz
.

Everything else seemed fine. Opened up the frunk, and looked at the battery, nothing abnormal there was going to grab my Fluke. Have had NO issues till now. I usually have climate conditioning set before church, but noticed it was not running when I walked up to the truck. Checked the Ford Pass App, said charging would start at 7:45 am. HUH!? (My departure time for church) Plugged the charger back in said it was starting to charge and climate conditioning started, 15 minutes late, I don’t know what was going on. Unplugged and tried to restart the truck, and all error messages no longer showed up and truck started normally. Attribute it to a glitch in the matrix. Got to church late, after saying prayers, realized I didn’t have my phone. Last time I remembered it was on the cowling just below the windshield after checking the Ford Pass App. Left church mid mass, got back to my truck and phone had fallen to the floor, didn’t remember putting it in the truck. Ended up just going home early…

At least you didn't lose your phone too. Here's a telltale that it's in the truck. If Android Auto connects the Google Maps (which it does automatically) I know the phone is SOMEWHERE in the truck. A couple times I has not and I realized I left the phone in the house.

I hope the rest of your day goes smoother ... a rocky start must mean a great finish !!!

How old is your 12v battery? That looks like an issue with LV system not charging properly.

Any signs of a recent OTA ?
OTA, None that I'm aware of. The truck asks me occasionally when I want them to happen and I keep selecting any day after 1am....

Which charger are you using? Maybe suspect?
I'm using the Ford OEM Charger. Have Not had any problems with it. Ford Pass App was functioning as expected prior to the event.

Has all the ear marks of a failing or weak 12v battery.

The 12v battery terminal voltage will not tell the whole story - if you want to rely on terminal voltage, you need to disconnect the battery, fully charge it, then let it settle for several hours and see how much the terminal voltage drops.

You could do a crank test or a health test if you have the capability/equipment for it.

If the battery is too far gone to hold a charge and deliver enough current you need a new one.

If you still have the 3 year b-to-b warranty get the battery replaced for free, or else shop for a new one, and keep the new one on a maintainer with an AGM mode, like the NOCO GENIUS1.

With a 2023 truck the 12v battery could be on it's last legs if it wasn't kept on a maintainer.
You will get a much longer lifespan with a maintainer - I have 14 years on a flooded 12v in my 2012 Leaf EV that is always on it when not being used.

Static test On the battery this morning was 12.21v
12.21v for an AGM is not 100%, 12.8 to 13.0 at rest is generally considered 100%

12.21V is down in the 50% range where charging is needed or else permanent damage (sulfates forming on internal plates can become permanent) may occur.

When charging, the terminal voltage may rise to the 14V range, then it will settle back to the 12.8 to13v range.

Under load, a 50% SOC will likely drop into the weak/danger/damage zone.

So I think that that confirms my original thinking that the issue is a weak 12v battery.

This may be of interest for more info on AGM batteries?

State of Charge (SoC) / PercentageResting Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) / Terminal VoltageStatus / Action Recommended
100% (Fully Charged)12.8V or above (Charge Voltage)Full charge. Ready for use/storage.
75%12.5V to 12.6VGood capacity. Normal operating range.
50%12.2V to 12.3VCRITICAL: Recharge Immediately. (Do not discharge lower than this charge level to maximize lifespan.)
25%12.0V to 12.1VDANGEROUS: Potential for irreversible damage (sulfation).
0%11.8V or belowDEAD: Deeply discharged. Severe, permanent damage likely.

Note: This AGM battery voltage chart is for a nominal 12V battery at a standard temperature of 77F 25C. Each 2V cell contributes to the overall battery voltage, so values will scale proportionally for 6V (divide by 2) or 24V (multiply by 2) systems.

1. Wait for Resting Voltage

To get an accurate reading, the battery must not be actively charging or discharging. This waiting period allows the surface charge (a temporary, artificially high voltage caused by charging) to dissipate and the chemical reaction inside the battery to stabilize. Deep cycle batteries are designed to discharge slowly, providing consistent power over extended periods. The discharge current—the rate at which the battery is used—affects how long you should wait before taking a resting voltage reading; higher discharge currents may require a longer waiting period for the voltage to stabilize.

  • After Charging: Wait at least 12 to 24 hours after the charger has been disconnected.
  • After Discharging/Use: Wait at least 1 to 4 hours after the load (lights, inverter, fridge, etc.) has been removed.

Measuring the voltage immediately after charging will always give you a reading close to the charger’s absorption voltage (e.g. 13.5V to 14.8V, which is not the battery’s true SoC.
