I really don’t understand all the @ing ford here. This dude is not the ceo, not in charge of supply chain, just a guy who either volunteered or was given a tertiary title to crowd source user feedback from current and perspective owners. I suspect he’s got another job that actually pays bills. @ all day, not sure it makes any difference.

We need like 10 Brians I think before we'd really feel the love. I they hadn't cancelled the truck and started building some 150+kWh packs I feel like we'd be in a much better place.

Pointless. You did see article talking about extended range EV drivers being long distance drivers. Whatever that means.

I was super excited to get my Lightning. Between my recent battery service experience and what I’m reading in the forum, ford is not interested in me as a customer. It’s a shame. I mainly registered here so I can stay on top of the T3 news and get on the reservation list early.

FORScan can read the address and codes for the coolant systems on a 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning. However, the tool does not scan the physical valve as an independent module. Instead, the coolant control valve is treated as a monitored slave component wired directly to a primary vehicle module.[1]
Depending on whether you are looking to pull Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), perform a pinpoint live test, or check hex addresses in As-Built data, here is exactly how to find it in FORScan:

1. The Module Addresses to Scan
If you are hunting down a fault with the coolant control valve (such as the standard P0D1B code for a stuck valve), you need to communicate with one of two primary modules where the valve logic lives: [1]

• SOBDMC (Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Module C / Rear Motor-Inverter): On Ford’s EV architecture (shared with the Mach-E), thermal management faults for the high-voltage battery cooling loop—including the physical diverter valve—are predominantly handled and logged by the SOBDMC.
• BECM (Battery Energy Control Module): This module handles overall pack temperatures and commands flow metrics.

2. Reading Live Data and Testing (PIDs)
Instead of altering raw As-Built hex codes, if you are diagnosing a cooling valve issue, you should use FORScan’s Live Data (PID) or Output Control functions. [1]

• Select either the SOBDMC or BECM from your module list.
• Switch to the command/test panel to look for valve position parameters or active self-tests.
• FORScan allows you to command an output status test to cycle the valve dynamically, verifying if the actuator is physically seized or failing to report its position back to the host module. [1]

3. Deleting or Bypassing the Address via As-Built
You can’t simply code out or disable the coolant valve address (7XX series blocks) in the As-Built configuration to clear the dashboard wrench light, this is not possible. [1]

The hardware profile for the high-voltage battery cooling loop is hardcoded directly into the core operating firmware of the SOBDMC and BECM. It cannot be toggled to a "disabled" state like a courtesy feature (such as approach lighting or turn signal flash counts). Deleting or corrupting the lines of data associated with thermal tracking will immediately trigger an unrecoverable U-code (lost communication/checksum error), locking the truck out of charging or driving. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

When I go to the Ford parts lookup and enter the search prompt for "Coolant Control Valve" I get three of them. I did put in my VIN as part of the search filters. I have an ER, without max tow.

The first relevant item is:
Engine Coolant Control Valve Towing Pack 13 is part # MU5Z8C513A

And the second one shows up as:
Hvac Heater Control Valve Engine Coolant with part # MU5Z8C513B

The third one says it's simply a Valve Asy - Engine Coolant Control with part # MU5Z8C513D, but this one has no picture to show what it looks like.

Pictures of the first two valves look very similar.

I think it's the -D version you're after if I remember.

Yeah, what I wanna know is whether that other diverter valve that looks physically identical can be used as a replacement even if we have to cannibalize the valve or the electronics from a different one to make it all work. Those two valves look so similar that there's got to be some small fix that can be applied to make the "A" version or the "B" version work as an alternative.

Regardless of why, this is not a good look.

I've been thinking about this thread for the last day as I was driving my truck.

If* this is an issue in part due to the cancellation of the Lightning then I would most likely sell my truck sooner rather than later.
For me, the thought that any part that can sideline the truck may be extremely difficult to obtain is not something I want to be driving.

Unfortunately there's no guarantees any other car/truck manufacturer won't have the same issue from time to time.

Though I do think the differentiator here is it's easier to attribute/believe this is due to the vehicle being cancelled rather than a industry wide issue.

Guess we'll see if more stories like this start being reported.

I have a 2022 XLT SR with 155kmi, best truck I've ever owned and I wouldn't have paid more than the 52k I paid for any more battery, but there are a lot of people who would have, they should've offered it.

I'm getting there too. I was planning to keep it until 2028 or possibly 2029. Now I'm not so sure.

It’s not ideal, but have you seen the temporary fix method by Martin Rebuilds? Depending on the mode of failure, it may at least get you your vehicle back running while your dealer locate the correct part.

I hope that @Ford Motor Company makes this right, expeditiously. It does not seem that failure of the coolant valve is entirely uncommon. I hope this is not an indicator for future parts availability when issues arise.

I got around to watching it. It seems like it could benefit from an upgrade to metal gears.
