[Feature Rollout] Pro Power Onboard with Vehicle Off

The trouble with a refrigerator is that the compressor cycles on and off and when the compressor is off there is practically no load at all. Depending on the time between cycles the truck may not see enough of a load and shut down. A constant load and/or a properly timed load (as mentioned in other posts) may solve this issue. But yes, that is annoying.

powered down, and just before the screen blanked, I saw a message saying something like, “Truck must be on to enable this feature”, which of course, makes no sense at all.

Actually it does. The message means that the truck must be on to CONTROL the PPOB features. Once you turn on PPOB and set to stay on after the truck stays on, you are no longer controlling the PPOB features.
As far as your fridge cycling and and causing PPOB to time out, see my posts #13 and #26 in this thread. It's an easy work around. It would be nice if Ford would fix the minimum load time out, or preferably give us the option to disable the minimum load time out. But until ( IF ) they do, the work around works fine.

For those that don’t have this switch yet, I am really happy to share that we are officially enabling the Pro Power Onboard with Vehicle Off toggle in your SYNC system.

This is rolling out specifically for 2022 and 2023 model year owners.

Earlier this year we pushed out Powertrain updates 25.13.12 (2022) and 25.8.5 (2023). A lot of you eagle-eyed forum members noticed that one. That update was the final prerequisite laying the groundwork for this feature. If your truck has already received that Powertrain update, we will be pushing the new toggle directly to your SYNC system via a silent update. You can visit this page to check your recent software update history.

Here is what you need to know about the rollout process.​

When does it start? Deployments begin June 25th

Will I receive a notification? No. This is a completely silent update. There will not be any in-vehicle notifications, release notes, or vehicle downtime. It happens entirely in the background.

How do I know if I have it? Once the silent update completes, it can take one or two power cycles of your truck (turning it on and off) before the toggle actually appears in your SYNC menu. Keep an eye out for it after the 22nd.

How do I use the feature? To enable, navigate to the Pro Power Onboard screen. Turn on the respective outlets you wish to use. Toggle Keep On When Vehicle is Off. Turn off the vehicle.

I know we took a while to get here. Thanks for keeping the feedback loud and clear so I could keep taking it to the software team. Let me know how it works for you once it shows up.

Brian, thanks so so much. Yes I now have this on mine. What a great update. It would be nice if the "run with truck off" stayed and didn't have to be reselected each time, but it's still a huge improvement. Thanks

I do still occasionally find that the PPOB does still shut down thinking it gets to the reserve setting for the battery, when, in fact, it's far from the selected setting. This is not it shutting down from minimum use as, at the time, the load is 4kW! But for some reason it thinks the battery reserve setting has been reached. This is a major issue if you're powering your house in an emergency.

I got to use this feature for the first time outside of trying it out, to be sure I knew how.
We had a power outage overnight in hot and muggy weather last night. I was very pleased to be able to run the A/C in the house all night for all of 2% of my charge.

Hi Brian, thank you very much for your help on here. I’ve been reading this forum for several months since I got my 2023 F-150 Lightning Platinum ER.

I’ve been having some problems with my truck and I’ve called in to Ford In Vehicle Technology a few times. Recently, I called in because I was having problems with my PPOB. I thought that my truck already had this feature, but I can confirm that it does not. I’m a bit surprised because I spent close to an hour on the phone with a technician and they even looked up my VIN to make sure I had the latest updates. The link that you provided doesn’t appear to be helpful for me because when I login, it shows recent updates, but it only shows three updates going back a couple of months. I can’t find a way to see the entire history and I can’t find any way to determine if I have the Powertrain update.

The technician said the only thing that they see that could be a problem is that my 12V battery is at like 49% or something. Not sure if that’s because the truck sometimes sits for a few days or what. You’d think that a big, high-tech ELECTRIC truck would have a way of notifying the owner that their puny 12V battery is low and causing problems, but I understand that Ford didn’t design this truck with that feature, so here I am.

I also have a bunch of other little problems that I wanted to mention in case they are also related to the 12V battery. I will be replacing the 12V battery, but I’m waiting for this kit to be available so I can buy a decent sized battery for this large truck. My other problems are: rain sensing windshield wipers don’t work at all in the automatic setting (and yes it’s turned on in the vehicle settings), turn signal doesn’t turn off after making left turns (right turns everything works correctly), sometimes get buzzing sounds coming from the audio system, sometimes CarPlay doesn’t automatically connect to my iPhone (all current updated software), sometimes the frunk won’t open, sometimes the black dots on the door handles don’t respond to a lock request (push).

By the way, I also tried to search for PPOB in the build in user manual for the truck and it doesn’t exist.

Hopefully you can help me figure out why I don’t have the PPOB (with truck off) feature yet and if it could be related to my low 12V battery issue. Thanks for you help here. I love the truck despite all of these issues.

Not Brian not AI, but I can confirm that a bad/weak 12 volt battery absolutely will prevent you from successfully getting over-the-air (OTA) software updates. That could include the update that enables this feature. I would address that first. Lots of threads on here about it.

Yes it's pretty crazy that maintaining the 12 volt battery seems to be the biggest weak point of these trucks, given how long we have been using 12 volt lead acid batteries.

Tested this extensively on a camping trip last weekend. Ran a ~130W ice maker from PPOB with the truck "off" for 14 hours straight. Biggest issue is it was impossible to set the reserve mileage on the screen while the truck was in on/ready as part of the PPOB turn on process. Both the < and > buttons either side if the range reserve slider , or touching the slider itself, immediately made the reserve selection go to 0 mi. There was no combination of onscreen buttons that would result in anything other than 0 or randomly I might get it to jump to 10 mi for range reserve selection .

I have the SU12 ECU, TCU and SYNC updates and my PPOB still turns off after 6 minutes with small load. Your 130W icemaker is more than the 90W needed to keep the ports alive. And unlike a refrigerator that cycles, an icemaker likely is continuously running. Try just powering a small LED light bulb and see what happens.

As far as the reserve setting, I did test and my <> buttons work fine to increment the reserve up/down 5 miles each press. But I did get the SYNC part as well.

Thanks. I charged my truck a lot and I’m using car scanner and an odb reader and I can see my 12V battery is at 83% SOC. I set my update time to 3pm in the hopes that I could get it to update today. I also called in to Ford In Vehicle Technology to ask them about forcing updates.

I asked the agent to see if my truck had Powertrain update 25.8.5 because the link that Brian provided didn’t really show me. She told me that my truck received the update but it did not complete. She said it comes out via satellite and they have no way of pushing the update to me. She did say that I successfully received an update on June 11 or something. I asked why it didn’t do the powertrain update and she said it expired and I just need to wait until the satellite gives it to me again. Ok, so I’m pretty technology literate and a lot of what she told me I find suspect, but who knows how Ford is doing this, certainly it’s not as straightforward and logical as Tesla has been with their updates.

Ok, so I’m pretty technology literate and a lot of what she told me I find suspect, but who knows how Ford is doing this, certainly it’s not as straightforward and logical as Tesla has been with their updates.

She's right about the failed updates being rescheduled, they come via the trucks telematics 4g cell connection not satellite signals (in the direct sense). Some updates might be received via wifi connection if you've enabled that function in your truck via the SYNC screen, but only few items have been known to transfer via wifi.

We are indeed left to the arbitrary scheduling of when a reissuance will occur, there is no way for us to force these updates to download on command.

I don't have measured numbers, but a fair amount. When the truck is ON, even with everything that you can turn off, there is a lot more of the truck systems running than just having PPOB turned on.
