But for the long time AZ VLT for EVs was a lot less. My 2023 Lightning purchased in 2022 was just renewed for $475. My 2021 MME was last renewed for $20.

Yeah, I just missed that discount. Bought mine in Feb '23 and the discount ended Jan 1. I was pretty bummed about that.

Today, I registered our Tesla with the state of Colorado, and there seems to be an increase in EV-related fees. When I first registered an EV in 2020, it was a single $50 fee. This year, it's $69 divided between two fees. I understand that states traditionally use gasoline taxes to pay for roads and maintenance. My economics mind likes how the taxes on gas are efficiently applied; you drive more, use the roads more, buy more gas, and pay more taxes.

EV taxes are flat-rate, which is the most annoying part as a driver who doesn't drive a lot. Yes, I can afford it... and in Colorado we get a state tax break when we purchase an EV... but just let me complain ?

Here's Colorado's breakdown of registration fees for our 2020 Tesla Model 3. My new Lightning in 2024 rang in at an eye-watering $1213! Ironically, EV drivers still pay a fee for "Emissions" programs.

Michigan has a $150 additional fee. We pay more than the average ICE driver.

$256 in Wyoming additional, for EV sticker. We also pay normal registration fees for an EV vehicle, no tax brakes and no incentives in Wyoming.

California went from $0.00 as an incentive to go electric. To $100. And now $200. For the electric add on fees.

Add in the weight fees for commercial registration and the registration fees, this adds up to over $1000. In registration alone.

Sales tax on the truck is based on your county, Los Angeles is 9.5%.
On a purchase of 50k you pay $4750 on sales tax alone plus all the registration fees.

On a lease, you pay all the registration fees, but only a percentage of the sales tax depending on the terms and residual value percentage. So if the residual is 65%, you pay 35% of the sales tax.

Yes, owning a commercial vehicle with additional weight fees is not cheap.
Add in insurance cost in California, cost of living in California and now the cost of rebuilding after the wildfires that ultimately we will be playing for with added taxes, insurance rates, ect. Please think twice before you decide to move here.

California’s vehicle costs keep climbing. Your breakdown shows why many rethink moving there; insurance, taxes, and fees quickly add up.

Louisiana, for now, does not differentiate between ice and ev registration.

Currently $126 in KY. But it goes up a few bucks each year. It's still half of what I was paying in road taxes buying diesel fuel with my previous truck.

Tennessee jumped up to $200 for EV 100 for hybrid. Since we “dont pay in to the gas tax”

Would prefer if everyone paid fees based on mileage. But New Hampshire just eliminated inspections, which would have been the way to capture that information.

New Mexico has no additional/separate EV fees (yet) - $176 for 2-year tags on the Lightning.

AZ used to have insane reg deals for EVs, less than $50/year in some cases. Unfortunately a new Lightning will set you back about $1000 or more for the year.

In Idaho you pay an additional $140 on top of the normal registration fee.
