I'm probably going to be buying a Lariat in October, but I'm torn between used and new.

There are deals on low mile '23's, especially if it's the standard range battery. There is one under 50k with 5k on the clock.

The '24's have the heat pump. Since I'm in Sacramento, does a heat pump matter? Also, maybe I can get a '24 Platinum for the price of a '25 Lariat.

Or just get '25 Lariat, although I haven't seen manny with Pro Power.

I haul more than I tow, but even my hauling is just 500 pounds or so, plus a hitch mounted cargo carrier with another 100 pounds max.

As for SR vs ER, the only long trips would be from Sacramento, CA. to Elko, NV. With the SR, if I really wanted to play it safe, it looks like I could top off in Reno and then again in Winnemucca. The ER would be nice, but 95% of my driving is a 30-35 mile radius.

Any thoughts or experiences would be very much appreciated.

If it were me, I would go with a new ER and purchase prior to September 30 to get the $7500 tax credit. I like having the range even though I don’t need it often. It is good to know it’s there if I decide/need to drive long distances.
Call it piece of mind-kind of like insurance hopefully you don’t need it but when you do, it’s good that you have it.-IMHO

Of course, I do not know your situation and to each his/her own, additionally inventory is likely to decrease significantly if there are a lot of people on the fence about purchasing an EV knowing that the tax credit is going to expire?
Good luck with what ever you decide!

I agree with getting the Extended Range. Even though most of your driving is short range, you will kick yourself later on when you find that you really want to do something that needs (or is FAR more comfortable) with the better range. Although most of my driving is back and forth to work (26 miles each way), I have had one leg (Needles to Barstow with the EA charger at Fenner down for upgrade) that was pretty tight. Killer headwinds and driving fast. It was only 138 mile in my ER Flash, but I used 70% of my battery. With the SR battery, I would be needed to slow down to extend the range. According to my calculator, I used just under 92KWH for that leg. That would be MAJOR pucker factor with only a 100KWH available!

If you like higher trimmed vehicles, this is the way to go. Let someone else pay for the depreciation.

why not go with a brand new $7,500 tax credit refund PRO SR with all the bells and whistles, have plenty of juice for ANY trip you want to make, and enjoy a MUCH lower cost...

for what I paid for my PRO SR, I could have bought TWO for the price of a single Platinum.

I would much rather have two trucks.

I have proven that SR vs ER is not a thing - it's all in your mind.

I have a 2022 Lariat ER with ALlL the bells and whistles bought as demo with 380mi. It has been rock solid. It was one of the earliest units build.

Depending on your financial situation, I would suggest looking for a low mileage 2022 or checkout the 0-0-0 offer on now from Ford on a new 2025.

Actually, the Flash has just about everything I'd want. I'm good with cloth seats. The only reason I was interested in the Lariat trim was for the rear slider. I use it quite often on my current truck for longer lumber or steel.
The only reason I was thinking Platinum was for the power running boards. I test drove a PB that had them when I first started down this rabbit hole, and having big feet, they are much more comfortable than the other style. Not a deal breaker, but just nice to have. Although, I've noticed a lot of Platinums have the fixed boards. Are the power running boards an option? I thought they were standard?

ER IS A MUST IMO. I leased mine because this is my first experience with an EV. Mine is a commuter car as I drive 25 miles to work a few times a week and charge it there. I don’t need the ER, but I must admit I’m always thinking about it. I leased a SR on purpose so I wouldn’t even consider buying it at the end of the 24 month lease. I love this truck and the SR works for me, but if I buy one it will absolutely be ER.

Yeah, the SR vs ER is the same as the 9.6 vs 2.4 pro power. Will I ever use the 240? Probably not. Will I use the 2.4? Yes.

It depends on your financial position. 7500 dollar tax credit is only good if you have a 7500 dollar tax liability. You can get a slightly used lightning for much less than 7500 dollars difference. A used lightning with 5k on it probably had a previous owner who just didn't get along with the EV. Lastly, Ford has been taking features out of the lightning every year since it came out. The only thing they have added is the heat pump. I haven't read how much difference that makes.

I have a MME er and a Lightning er. Even though I rarely need the extra range, the few times I do, I am so thankful I have it.

There was a period of time when material supplies were lacking and even Platinums might have not gotten retractable running boards, there was a time when we could option the retractable boards, but around MY24/25 they simplified the options available from the factory to streamline production. IIRC you could still do them as a dealer installed option ordered from the dealer parts department or third party versions

This is absolutely true. As long as you can charge at home and power your frig, freezer, TV and internet; you're good. It would be nice to have the additional range and power but it's mainly in your head. The same goes for a lot of the bells and whistles. I bought a minimal Flash. Smaller battery, no tailgate step or power tailgate; no spare etc. It's white. My heart wants a red Platinum but actually I'm quite happy with what I have and I saved a boat load of money.

Not really.

We bought an EV in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Each year I had to generate income, via converting IRAs to Roth, to use the tax credit. Then, they made the tax credit a time of sale option, and that option did NOT require that you had the ability to take the full tax credit at time of filing.

I specifically wanted the 9.6 Pro Power. Will I use 240V? I don't know. In 7300 miles I have have used substantially more than 2.4KW quite a few times. Just last Friday at our fireworks show that I crew on, I had a compressed air system plugged into one phase in the bed and a crock pot and heated serving tray (and some smaller stuff) for our food in the other. That may or may not have exceeded 2.4KW at times, but was handy and I did not need to worry about the lower limit. Other times I have had various other stuff plugged in that absolutely exceeded 2.4KW. I am not a trades person so not using it for jobsite power.
