Placing huge tariffs on Chinese cars is a clear sign the US automakers are way behind the 8 ball, know it, and are scared. If US automakers don't start making better, cheaper EVs they will be left behind.
It's more than that. But, discussing why would take us down a nasty, politically infused road, and we would all come out dirtier on the other side.

Yes, there are definitely issues of Chinese government support for industries. However, the important thing is that the Chinese auto companies are working much harder on EVs and will eat our lunch if we don't get moving.

See this thread and other articles on the amazing progress of Chinese car companies:

They already ate our lunch, considering that in order to do business in China, you had to partner with a Chinese company. American auto manufacturers showed Chinese automakers, over the past decades, how to build a car. Couple that with spying, stolen technology, and slave labor, and you have the backbone of their success.

Tariffs will not solve this. It will keep the enemy at the gate, but all China automakers have to do is place a couple of assembly plants in Mexico and it's game over.

Our Government (both parties), and the greed of many corporations, got us to where we are today. And our children will suffer for it.

This is American and never let it be said we don't have the best political system money can buy!

Volvo S90 already made in China.

BYD currently building a manufacturing plant Mexico.

Without tariffs and subsidies, the Chinese market would likely soon bury US EV manufacturers with affordable ev’s.
And that’s exactly what they intend to do.

They are doing the right thing. If we are behind then catch up. If someone is buying anything but a Tesla as their first EV they might leave it with a bad taste in their mouth regarding EV's. The software if huge to EV's, something I didn't want to accept before, but it is true. We need to catch up on the software/batt tech side ASAP. Chinese Auto Manufacturers already have all of Teslas software so its easy for them.

Also new tariffs on lithium and batteries. That will affect the cost of some North American made EVs.

Pretty crazy,
we already have inflation worries by the Fed... but we tax cheaper products that will raise prices?
we already have Federal subsidies to buy EV and Solar .... but we keep out cheaper sources to raise prices?
we all know we need to reduce oil consumption... but we subsidize the industry to keep prices low?
we want to keep our technology safe ... but we send it anywhere else to build?

Don't worry. Like in the past, one entity in government will overrule the other. So you have to do is look at the lease rules workaround.

A failure of US EV makers is how many people complain about EVs not being affordable. People don't seem to know about anything but the high dollar vehicles and are surprised when I show them a Leaf or 500e a few years old can be found on marketplace for less than $7k. "Premium first" somehow became "Premium only" for Ford who tossed out the Focus EV and Chevy seems like they want to kill the Bolt completely. People want BYD because legacy OEMs are all chasing the high value trims and not even trying to compete for people with less than a $40k budget (MachE Select price is $42,500)
