LR tire picked up a nail at 15k miles, can I replace just the one or do I need to pay for a full set?

I provided a link to Discount Tire that shows what they would repair, and that's pretty clearly in the "we won't repair" area.
That matches NHTSA guidelines. Tire shops that are willing to repair such a puncture will be criminally liable if there is a subsequent failure. Before these government guidelines were established, repairs of this nature were routine. The vast majority never had any further issues.
I can’t get a puncture like that repaired by a tire shop even when I tell them it’s for a farm implement that never leaves the field or exceeds 10 MPH. I have to fix it myself.

Yeah, I guess OP didn't bother looking at the link I posted, their picture of a tire couldn't be more clear.

You can measure tread depth and have new tire shaved as others mentioned OR….
There are millions of tires taken off these trucks yearly by clowns who want to look cool with some AT even though they just drive it to work and Costco. You know who you are…. Thus there is a huge used tire market that sell them based on tread thickness. Sure you can get a match. Inspect them closely and have your shop inspect them too. I got one on EBay for another vehicle and it was mint.

Yes it looks to be in the danger zone.

I once repaired a tire with a plug that was in about that location, it held for a few months but then failed at speed and tore the tire up, so if you try patching it yourself, be prepared.

Do tire shops ever consider putting a tube inside a tire like that where the puncture hole cannot be repaired?

That used to be a thing, an alternative to buying a new tire, as a temporary fix at least. Maybe they don't do that anymore, been a while since I had tire trouble.

They don't do that. The issue isn't worrying about a future leak, it's about the failure at speed that a tube won't save.

Yea I guess I'm showing my age...it was not uncommon back in my early days of driving when tires were simply wheel balloons, and men were men...lol

My father in-law was similar. If he had an undersized tire, he would just put in extra air. Mixing and matching treads, or radial and non-radial? Not a problem.

He had those tire patches that you light and they melt and patch the tube. When I went to sell them after he passed, they had been outlawed by the feds and were hard to come by. I did sell them to a sketchy character.

LOL, when I used to drive around with my dad, if he saw a broken down car by the side of the road he used to say jokingly "get a horse!"

"What does that mean?" I asked and got a long lesson in roaming history.

And apparently in those good ole simpler days, horse 'brownies' were a major problem leading to disease outbreaks in big cities.

In the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's transportation's byproduct "smog" was the big brown health problem.

Now we have to cope with global climate change with fires and mud slides (brown seems to be the common thread) all those ICE vehicles contribute to.

Planet earth, a muddy mess.

The two local independent tire shops here would plug and patch that type of puncture. We’ve a very mild climate, no freeways. the wear pattern pretty indicative of hard cornering. I’d be worried if you were towing heavy at speed in hot weather and… hammering those turns šŸ˜‚ !

I would like someone to explain to me why they believe that having a new rubber tire on one corner of a vehicle is going to cause a steel driveshaft to fail. Sounds like a hard sales pitch to me. I suspect if one tire has a higher height than the other tires, the rubber would wear down on the higher height tire. If that wasn't the case, why wouldn't vehicles with different tire pressures around the vehicle not have drivetrain issues?

Mostly a problem for locked differentials but it can add unneeded stress on the drivetrain. It's kinda like chinese water torture.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your suggestions.

Given where the damage is and the possibly-iffy nature of a repair, I think I'm going to just go for a full new/upgraded set. Perhaps Michelin Defenders. I'll now start going through the many threads in here on picking a good tire...

Much appreciated!

PS: Anyone in the southern New England region want some used OEM Hankooks?
