When I charge at home and after it charges to the target percentage, is it normal to have to push the button next to the charge location to release it? I read elsewhere people just pull the charger out but it seems to be locked for me until I hit the button. There's also a short window for me to take the charger out before the lock reengages.

I only press the latch button on the CCS1/J1772 handle, never have to press the unlock button in the center of the state of charge lamp, that's only required when stopping DCFC charging sessions

The button has no function with level 2 charging. Press the button on your charger handle, wait a second or two, then unplug. There is no "lock".

No need to wait. When you grab the handle and press to unlock it, you open the switch for the reference signal that says it's safe to charge. This immediately opens the contactor on the EVSE (charger) and stops the flow of current before you even get the inkling to pull the handle from the truck.

Huh, learn something new. I always assumed I needed to hit the unlock button before unplugging at home.

with DC charging that button is relevant. You would press it to stop your DC charge cycle. If you didn't, it would be locked to the truck despite your efforts to remove it.

When using DCFC the button under red arrow is locked by a truck side interference lock, to release that, you must first press the button in the center of the charging ring, it tells the trucks onboard controller to stop requesting energy from the charging station, once the station acknowledges stop-charge has occurred the truck releases the interference lock allowing the adapter button to be depressed.

When you're level-2 / level-1 connector is being used the interference lock is not involved, but there is a micro switch which sends a signal to stop-charging, you hear the EVSE and the truck click when pressed, it's safe to remove the connector without needing to press the little button on the charging ring.
