Ladies and Gentleman I present to you my EREV

I find Pennsylvania has quite a few charging deserts when towing.

If I need to go somewhere far I just simply load up the big inverter generator and 11kw portable charger.

Now if I would ever be close to running out of range I can put enough charge in her with the level 2 so I can make it to a DCFC.

Sure it's only 11kw rate but it would could be a savior.

Anyone else take the nuclear option?

11kw is a good charge. Have you calculated your gas mileage? I've always wondered how efficient it is to charge using a generator.

A lot of people laugh at that, but don't think twice about carrying gas cans to fill up an ICE truck.

As our home electricity pricess keep climbing, ypu always have to re-calculate the cost to charge from generator. In sone parts of Massachsetts we pay 35 cent kWh delivered.

Where are you in PA? I know the center of the state use to be bad, but I feel with the Tesla access now most issues have gone away. What's your mi/kw when towing? Just surprised this is necessary, at least in my experience.

So I did some initial testing today just to see the outcome... For science of course.

It looks like I can add 2 kwh every 11 minutes in an emergency situation.

Now granted I am an Electrician and this generator is used on jobsites.

I wouldn't advise anyone to spend 5000 to haul a generator around only for piece of mind.

Also curious. I’m not towing but I’ve made a loop recently several times coming up from MD to Buffalo via US 15, then over to Fredonia NY and back down through central PA again via Jamestown NY and Warren PA.

There is definitely a charging desert in kind of Mid to NW PA in the Allegheny region, but otherwise I-80 and I-99 seem pretty well covered. Towing would be an issue between Jamestown NY and the nearest charger in PA, especially in the winter I’d suppose. No big deal for ER battery without towing though even in very cold weather.
