Are you in a hot area? That could definitely be affecting your range. If so be prepared for a significant range boost in the winter. If you're somewhere cold, disregard that hah!

Reminder, EPA EV Range ratings are based on EPA mileage measurement courses.

EPA "Highway" course has an average speed of 48.3mph.
EPA "City" course has an average speed of 19.6mph with 23 stops per 11 mile cycle.

This. You will get the rated range at slow speed in the city. But nobody cares about range in that situation. You will NOT get the rated range at real life highway speeds. That's just the way it is.

I’m not sure that “nobody cares” about city range, but I get your point. All EV manufacturers should push the EPA to devise a “highway range” and “city range” rating that would be far more helpful to prospective buyers.

I average 2.1 miles/kWh on the highway at 70mph, which means I get about 200 miles of “range” in my SR Lightning. Around town, I average 2.7 miles/kWh, which would translate to a “city range” of about 260 miles. The truck has an EPA range estimate of 240 miles. Then there’s the issue of “winter range”… 🤣

The solution is all about infrastructure. If we had more DCFC stations, especially along rural highways, people would be more likely to get over range anxiety. Not sure if we will get there in my lifetime. I used to think that we were close, but recent events have made me question whether or not Americans want to transition from ICE vehicles.

Just reset the BMS then drive it and don’t think twice about range. If you got slightly less gas mileage you’d carry on with life. It’s such an EV thing.

Small point of clarification...in an EV there is little to no loss of efficiency when accelerating quickly. The reasons a gas vehicle are inefficient while accelerating quickly - low gearing, non-optimal RPM, rich fuel/air mixture, etc - don't apply to an EV.

Also the regen during during the stopping proceeding the acceleration.

Hybrids have these same advantages to some extent.

I wish!

I may get 2.0-2.1 on the hwy at 70, but somehow it always seems like the headwinds shift on my roundtrip so that I only end up in the 1.8-2.0 range. People say Michigan is flat and windless, my range numbers tell me otherwise. lol

My quick rule of thumb is:
Summer = 2.5 kw/mi
Winter = 1.8 kw/mi (temps below 45F)
Towing = 1.0 kw/mi

Just take those numbers and multiple by your pack size. ER is 131kw so:
Summer = 327mi range
Winter = 235mi
Towing = 131mi
That's what I've been getting, and I live in Downeast Maine. I bought mine in the winter, and was disappointed by the 230-250 I was always getting. I looked around in here, though, and found that my Lightning was more intelligent than my Tesla when it came to those estimates...it actually used my driving habits and the temperatures to adjust expected kw/mi (and, therefore, mileage).

Yes, it's all relative. I took a drive across the county (Contra Costa) on Monday, kinda warm out. It was about a 45 mile drive. I was getting 2.4m/kW, doing 70mph on the freeway, and slower in the rush our traffic (Bout 5 Miles), thought that was pretty good. BUT . . . on the way back I was getting about 1.8/1.9 m/kW. After getting it home, I realized that it was pretty windy out. So, tail wind going, and head wind returning. So the average was 2.1 m/kW which is .1 below my average (2.2). I'm ok with that....

Hello

I just purchased a used 2024 lariat with 10k miles on it. It’s at 91% charge and only shows 236 miles of range. Is that normal and are there settings I should change to optimize the range. I don’t expect the full 320 but thought it would be much higher then where it is at now. Thanks!
Half my miles 40-60 mph, half 70-75mph. Winter average 1.8, summer avg 2.1

No, summer months should show a higher range estimate. I just finished charging at home. I charged to 90 percent, and it shows and estimated range of 311 miles. The estimate is pretty accurate to what I am actually getting.

Your driving habits will make all the difference in the world. My estimated range charging at home is great during the summer ☀ months. At home, I charge to 90 percent, and the estimated range goes as high as 316 miles. I don't exceed 70 MPH. I even drive around with junk in the frunk.

Yep, you do have some stuff in the frunk! :wink:
Looks like a lil bit of everything....
