80A Charging Cable Under Garage Door

I had searched and seen a few different options that people were doing, but no one had specifically addressed an 80A. I was hoping it wouldn't matter, to be honest. The solution you suggested seemed like a good idea. Apparently, thanks to current economic policies, they are no longer shipping to the US.

That's unfortunate.

I run my 80A cord under my garage using the Undor solution. It seems like a very bad idea to smash the wire that is probably carrying the most current in your house.

If you look up the Undor instructions you can get an idea of how to set up a similar system on your own. A small block at the bottom of the door on each side and an oversized door seal is really all you need. You'll have to adjust the garage door but YouTube will show you how to do it.

What happens at 6:01am?

My low low Special EV Meter Time-of-Use rate goes up from 5.3 cents / kW (1 thru 5 A.M) and then 8.2 cents from (5 thru 6 A.M.) up to 17 cents /kW. Meanwhile, the residential rate here (11 cents / kW) stays steady on the main house meter throughout the 24-hour cycle. So, obviously our EVs charge at 80 amps at night

The red and white FCPS labels are for Sonny Boy when he visits with his Audi E-Tron and of course comes in late at night and then sleeps into the morning.

Why not mount it to the brick?

That's what happens when your 100+ year old house with the original 20 amp service of screw in fuses gets upgraded. There's no way to run new wire through brick and plaster walls.

I've done some searching here already, but didn't really find any answer to this specific question. I'm considering getting the Grizzl-E Ultimate 80A EVSE, provided my electrician confirms we have the "electrical" room to install one. Otherwise, it'll have to be a 48A EVSE. I'm currently using the Level 1 EVSE that came with the truck and running the cord under the garage door. Will the larger 80A cord fit under the door with no problems? Is the 48A cable the same size? If not (assuming it's smaller), does it fit fine?

I'd love to pull into my garage, but as someone recently posted (WXman? WeatherMan?) it's possible by maybe 2 inches clearance. And that's from wall to door. I'd have to do some decluttering to have a clear wall. Also, I don't want to mount outside on the brick and in the elements. So for now, I have to operate on the assumption that charging outside with the cable under the door is the way it will be.

You know you should be able to adjust the stop of the door up and down. So if the door is tight enough that the cable makes it reverse just adjust it up a smidge and then It should be fine.

Drill?

Only perpendicular to the wall, outside to inside or inside to outside. The conduit is generally more acceptable looking on the outside of the house.

Bury?

Money and added complexity. Generally not run alongside the house to protect it from being damaged by digging or other work. Digging a ditch along your foundation is generally frowned upon. Underground is used to run power across space away from the house or power source. It has to be deep enough that regular yardwork (planting stuff) won't damage it.

FYI: my charge station pro quit. I opened it up and water poured out. The gasket was installed correctly. Even though it dried out, it never came back to life. I’m using the charger that came with the truck via a 220v plug I had installed for moments like this.

I run the Ford Pro Charger wire under my garage door using a 3d printed wire protector (U shaped PLA plastic, covers the wire and supports the weight of the door). Since the wire is so thick, there is an ever so slight opening on either side of the protector where the door seal doesn’t touch the floor, but for a few cents for the PLA print, it does the job. I did have to monkey with the garage door limit a little to get it to stay down with the wire and protector under it though.

Keep in mind that if the door is open enough for the FCSP cable to not be pinched, it will easily be open enough to allow mice into the garage unless you come up with a spacer to block that.
