Bought a used 2022 ER Lariat from Jack Demmer Ford in Ann Arbor Michigan on January 14th, 2026. Mileage on the vehicle was 27,600. The vehicle appeared to be in great shape and I was an out of state buyer. I paid 44,600 OTD with all taxes, etc. I drove it from Ann Arbor to just east of Cleveland Ohio with no issues.

I made it 8 days and less than a 1000 miles before I had a serious error code appear.

Error code states drivetrain malfunction, reduced power. Is not DC fast charging correctly, will not take on more than 66% battery. I am limited to a whole 106 miles of range.

My local dealer can’t get me in a loaner car until Feb 3, 2026.

I am not super nervous about ownership. I tried the the 12 volt reset and that did not reset the code.
Do I buy an extended warranty? The sales dealer offered one at 75k, five year at 3800 dollars.

Can CarScanner reset the code? But would that help in any way?

Get it to a local or selling dealer, hopefully they get your issue resolved quickly.

and, it's still under warranty, so there's no reason to purchase any 'extended service plan' or anything else... you've likely just encountered the 'bad module' situations some of the rest of us have, and FORD will replace it and get it taken care of, and you'll be back to driving successfully again, soon... the reason it will only charge to a certain % is due to the 'bad cell' within the module(one of the Modules that make up the battery pack) not being in 'balance' with the rest of the battery pack's cells... that single cell is what is causing the issue, although, as you can see, you can still drive the truck.
Even if you don't think you can charge, you might find that you can. Take a drive to use some of the battery pack, getting it down to maybe 60%. At home, plug back into your 240v EVSE and see if it charges back up to 66%.

Had this exact thing happen to me. Used 2024, less than 1000km into ownership and a module went bad. Would only charge to 64%. Dealer replaced module under warranty, couple days work. Truck now works perfectly. Don’t sweat it! Once they replace the module it will be the best truck you’ve ever owned :)

The symptoms seem to point to a battery module. Both the lack of DCFC reliability and 66% SOC are symptoms that point that way. Hoping they can get you fixed up soon under warranty.

In the past, a rental was covered if no loaner is available when a battery module goes bad. Ask @Ford Motor Company about this and/or call the Ford BEV hotline and ask.

I’m living this right now too 😊 My 2022 Platinum threw the infamous orange (or is it red?) ring of death about three weeks ago. The dealer traced it to the onboard charger and ordered the replacement part—but I still don’t have a delivery date.

They were kind enough to set me up with a rental for the next month, so I’m not too stressed. That said, with the sub-zero temps we’ve been having, the truck has gone from holding about 60 miles of charge down to just 24. I’ve tried all the usual tricks (including lowering the charge rate), but no luck so far.

My GPT says there’s a built-in failsafe that limits charging to protect the rest of the system, which would explain why it won’t go past 60—or now 24—miles. I’m not 100% sure that’s accurate, but it does make sense.

Even with the inconvenience, I still love this truck. It’s just that good. From everything I’ve read, this isn’t an unusual issue—the error message just tends to misdiagnose the root cause.

Good luck—you’re not alone!

Since I seem to be set with this vehicle to the foreseeable future, I contacted Granger Ford and purchased an EV Premium care extended warranty.

6 years
125,000 miles,
Added the lighting protection
50 dollar deductible.

I had less than a month until it didn't qualify anymore for Ford's warranty. It will take me out to 2032.

Cost all in, $2550.00😀

The dealer that sold me the truck wanted...

5 years
75,000
NO lighting protection
100 deductible

They wanted $3895.00🤮

I understand that the dealer wants to make money, but come on, they sold me a truck that made it 600 miles before it had a major issue.

Thank you everyone who pointed toward Granger Ford!

Sorry for your troubles, hope ya get fixed quickly.

I'm a bit confused on the comment of years (6) and "out to 2032". Everything I read on extended warranty (if you buy it still within the 3 year/36k mileage) is that the number of years on the warranty plan sort of hides/subtracts the original 3 years in front of it, as the start date of the years is when the truck was originally purchased.

So a 6 year extended warranty is really 3 more beyond the original 3. Do you have the document showing out to 2032, or did you buy a 9 year warranty (I'm showing the 9-year warranty is around $3350). You may already know all this, just sharing if not.

From Granger FAQ:

When does coverage begin on new Ford Protect Extended Service Plans?

If you purchase a Ford Protect Extended Service plan, your coverage begins from your vehicle’s original in-service date and mileage. This is the date and mileage when a dealer first sold the vehicle as new. Coverage expires at the earlier of the number of months purchased or the number of miles purchased.

For example: Your vehicle’s warranty start date is July 1, 2022 and the odometer reads 10,000 miles. You purchase a 5-Year / 100,000-Mile Premium Care plan on November 1, 2022. Your coverage starts on July 1, 2022 and expires on June 30, 2027 or when your odometer reads 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Ahh, that may be different....I thought it was stated you were (barely) still within the 3/36 warranty. Apologies on the runaround.

No worries! It seems like it makes more sense to buy it used honestly. It would appear to last longer than buying it new. I will confirm its start and end date and let you know!

As other mentioned these are the symptoms of a bad HVB module. Get it checked by the selling dealership. If the diagnostic shows a faulty HVB then it will be covered by the powertrain warranty. And Ford will put you in a rental while your truck is at the shop. Lead time is minimum 2-3 weeks to get the new part. Mine just got delivered. I'm hoping to get my truck back next week. Good luck.
