2025 Lariat Tire Recommendations?

Today is turning out to be an expensive day.

Last night got a notification from the Ford App that one of my tires had low pressure. Went down and looked for the issue (didn't see anything) and used the pump to pump it back up; it was about 15lbs down.

Went to the shop today to have them check it and plug it. Turns out it's the same tire that they plugged a couple months ago (nail from the dropoff area of the local Goodwill shop -- no good deed goes unpunished!).

They plugged it but said it's too close to the sidewall to be permanent. It's in between the first and second tread if I recall correctly.

He's telling me I need to replace all 4 tires. So, looking for recommendations. I've seen a number of posts here, so I'm using search to try and find the old(er) threads but figured I'd start a thread to get some additional input.

Current/original tires: Good Year Wrangler Territory HT 275/60R20 - 116T (?)
Treadwear: 680
Traction: A
Temperature: B

Even more painful is that the truck doesn't even have 13K miles on it yet.

Right after I got this news, I got an email from the electric company, and they want their monthly blood payment. lol.

As I'm researching this more, I'm seeing the "replace all 4" is primarily for AWD vehicles and doesn't apply to the Lightning (unless they are all worn).

Ford's recommendation is to replace two tires, and put the new ones on the rear axle.

Think I'm going to just order two of the same tire, have them put on the back (which is where the bad tire is anyways), find a cheap wheel/rim and use the other tire as a hot spare.

Anyone have any tips for sourcing a matching wheel/rim to use for the spare, and then whatever parts are required to mount the spare and actually be able to use it?

I'm assuming there's nothing "spare" related with the truck since they didn't ship it with one. (Will go crawl around and look after dinner.)

I thought the Lightning was AWD?

In theory they are, but the front and rear EDM's are not mechanically linked ie. no transfer case.

Synchronizing motor RPM's FR/RR can be done by the drive controller for disparate wear between front and rear axles.

I was going to say two things:

1. Shhhhhh.... I already talked to the shop and ordered the two tires. They should arrive and be put on later today.

2. Based on what I read the difference is that there are two different power sources for each axle (simpler version of what TaxmanHog said).

I did read another option of just replacing one tire as mine have so little wear. It was talking about measuring all the tread on each "good" tire, ordering a new tire (same make/model), and then potentially "shaving" it down to bring it in line with the others. Apparently, that's a service some tire companies provide.

I'd rather just buy two tires. lol.

Our ‘25 Flash didn’t have a spare either.

The drop/lift mechanism is there but you’ll need a kit to lower and raise it (usually comes with a lug wrench) like this:

You’ll also need a 2 ton or higher jack -power, scissor, etc.

The OE spares are 18” but I opted for a matching wheel and tire. Priced used wheels/takeoffs and new tires on FB Marketplace and Craigslist. No one wanted to sell just one. Checked wrecking yards but nothing local. Ended up buying a tire and wheel from Texas Truck Tire on eBay which was less than buying them separately. $39 shipping anywhere in the lower 48. Paid ~$350 all-in. Here’s one with a brand new tire, but they often have used ones…

Haven’t had a flat in decades but I don’t want to use the goo kit since it can make it difficult to repair the tire later. I’ll have AAA change it if I get a flat. Hope I didn’t jinx it now.

Since you don't have a spare, I like your plan of replacing 2 and using the good one to give you a spare. I had a major flat on the highway and having a spare was great. I had my whole family and it would have been quite the hassle and time sink to get everyone and everything home.

If you use discount tire, they will often buy tires from you that still have life in them, when you buy new ones to replace them with…. FYI for anyone reading this thread.

After 10K service (tire rotation, etc) I complained to SA that the front right tire vibrated badly above 50 mph. Asked to have all 4 tires rebalanced. SA called me and said one of the tires could not be balanced - some sort of defect in the tire. The dealer replaced the one bad tire. I was OK with that and in 2000 miles of driving haven’t noticed anything negative.

- Yes. The TPMS is “readable” once the wheel is put into use (providing it’s the correct frequency).
- These days most spare tires are intended for temporary use. A correctly sized spare tire (OE tire matching diameter) with with a tread depth of 2/32 or more would be considered acceptable by most anyone’s account.

I view a plug as a temporary fix. I'd take it to a different shop and have them unmount the tire and fix it right with a patch on the inside. As long as the plugs/patches are on the tread, that should work. Obviously I'm so cheap I squeak when I walk.
