Question:
If you do this modification to a 2023, using the 2024 as-built, does this affect future OTA updates for your truck, since Ford will expect is still has the 2023 configuration? - ie do you disable the automatic OTA updates to avoid problems in the future?

I doubt it as you’re only updating the ipc portion. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen an OTA update for the ipc for us.

Ah yes…I forgot about that one. Honestly they’ve had plenty of time to add this and haven’t so I feel that it was something they could have easily done by now but just decided not to. Oh well, as long as we can do it for ourselves I’m happy.

Shame it takes that much effort and is something not available to the average owner though. It's really like no one designing the software ever used an EV. Granted I'm sure the average person doesn't care about the charge rate but it's a must have for the nerds among us. Would be nice if it showed the amperage when DCFC and the optimal temperature range for max speeds. oh and if you were being limited by the station or truck like other EVs. Yeah....I'm asking a lot from Ford but doesn't hurt to dream right! I'm sure Soon™ For now at least we have Car Scanner.

My truck shows two IPC updates in its history.
First was 22-PU0930-RBA-CHM in mid-2023 that added SOC% and volume increase for frunk ajar.
Then there was 6.8.0 in late 2023 that added [future] BC 1.3 animations and moved some icons around. And added SOC% for those that missed it earlier.

yeah I seem to recall seeing something about an earlier one. My 23 was a December 23 build and bought it in Feb 24. Got 6.8 in I think September which added the SOC.

It would be cool if @Ford Motor Company could provide services like this. I would pay for the option. Just like I would pay to have the big shifter knob replaced and allow my passenger to use their laptop on the table while we are driving!

I noticed Ford commented once on this thread saying they would find out about this. But (sorry for the harsh outlook) whoever is commenting doesn't know jack shit about the actual technicalities of OTA updates or Ford's technical decision making involving what and when OTAs are done. Maybe they will reach someone who can relay some useful info, but it is very unlikely. The people watching/commenting on these forums are simply damage control and to save face with owners. They can't do much of anything except fwd a request to the correct department in the same way us owners can if we just knew the correct department to even reach out to.

Instead, I'll speculate here that somewhere deep in the inner workings of the higher levels of software engineering related to the OTA system there is a small group, possibly one manager who decided that this feature: live charging rate on the IPC isn't worth the risk of an OTA to the IPC since it's on a module running QNX and even though the update would go over the Telematics unit and ethernet versus CAN like we're able to do it with FORScan the risk isn't worth the feature by some traditional rubric they are using. Also, could have something to do with NHSTA and that this is a module that is critical to the safe drivability of the vehicle so there could be a risk vs reward rubric that is applying here (from a different safety team) even if every single owner called in and said "we want this" it still may never happen, unless they find a critical safety issue involving something else that meets the threshold to do an OTA on the IPC, then they could very well include the live charging rate basically free of charge. This is why we don't have a legit firmware for the 22'-23' trucks and we have to cheat the system by using a 24's firmware. Thankfully they didn't change the hardware and we are able to do this. And NO, no one really knows how Ford treats this being done, they definitely know b/c they interrogate the trucks routinely to keep a live update of all software and config every truck is running in the cloud. If they were evil overlords, they could very well write a script to identify each and every VIN and owner who has done an update outside of their approved version schema, but will they,,,,,, NO, because they can't even design bug free software themselves or perform regular timely OTAs to the customers who just want a truck that drives from point A to B So, no , the short answer is, they don't care what we are doing and they don't care what our petty little software wants are. They are too busy designing the next best thing that will hopefully be closer to being one step behind the Chinese or Tesla,, the fact that the Lightning is 5 steps behind is, well, not really a concern as long as NHSTA isn't on their back.

Well, got mine updated last night and it was an adventure lol. Absolutely need to make sure you keep monitoring your power supply throughout. Mine either lost connection or the truck somehow went into battery saver mode and I almost completely smoked my 12v battery down to 5v. In my picture below it shows that I started updating the truck at 5 PM, but didn't realize I was having power issues until 6:30 PM. The update failed and I was really worried I had just turned the truck into a 6500lb paperweight lol. That caused a cascade of other problems because now my power supply was trying to charge the 12v and run the truck when doing the updates and kept tripping its OCP at over 1500w output.

Ended up having to disconnect my 12v battery entirely, run the truck 100% from my power supply and put the 12v on a separate battery tender so I could hopefully revive it. Thankfully with this setup the second attempt at the update went perfectly smooth and my truck was ready to go for the drive to work this morning.

My recommendation to anyone running updates like this one is to use a ground other than the negative 12v battery lug. It really seems like my truck went into battery saver, but I can't say for certain. Once I put my power supply on the negative jumping post in the frunk it held power steady for the entire 6 hours.

yeah it's advised against using the battery itself but can be done. Just have to make sure you're on the right side of the sensor and have a good connection. The locations in the passenger frunk area are more reliable but seems I always break a clip every time I open the darn thing. I need to just add the lugs that poke through the cover like some others have done.

Yep, I'm planning on adding a nice 175a anderson connector to a good ground and right to the DCDC converter output so I can just plug in to a really solid connection and avoid the clamps all together.

I did this mod sometime back. Have a stable 100a power supply (overkill). One important thing after you load the firmware is to apply the asbuilt from the model year that had this IPC version else you may have some weird operational bugs.

I have put many thousands of miles on the truck since doing this and it has worked flawlessly. I love the better Blue Cruze animations and of course the charging speed is super helpful to see speed at a glance when at a charge station. I am very happy I did this mod.
