I think what you see mounted on it's side, in front, is the CONVERTER, when charging... as it gets hot taking 240v power and Converting to DC for the battery pack...hence the cooling lines...

That's odd, what kind of meter and what kind of load? Try and inductive load like a motor.

That's wild, only thing I can think is the inverter's AC is too noisy, but even cheap VMMs should have filtering to fix that to measurement. Have you tried your meters on grid power and verified it works.
