Intended use for slotted space on front console?

What is the intended function of the picture console space? It doesn't really fit coins. It's too small for cell phones. I asked Gemini AI and it came up with a storage compartment. There was an extra one on the floor of my truck when I bought it and I gave it back to the dealership. They didn't seem to know what it was for either. Any ideas?

Coin Holder

I have the trailer brake controls in that spot, I wonder if it could be an attachment point for other accessories that would clip to the ridges?

Doesn't hold mail very well, too thin for my phone or key FOB, hard to get coins or a pen out of...

I decided I'd use it to keep my slide rule handy for remaining range estimations...what about you?

I guess our phone is too old and fat for the slot...it fits the cup holder fine though.

My wife usually has it anyway, ostensibly so she can be contacted any time of day or night...except when I call her it seems.

She uses it in a phone holder on her Prius dash while distracted driving down the road gabbing with her daughters.

Not being "on-call" while driving works for me.

I get nervous putting the phone on the short edge. Feels risky like I could bump and break the phone.

Also too thin for my old Zune:

But because the Lightning USB is particular and won't play the Zune directly through the USB, I use an SSD with all my music in a USB interface/case that fits down in the front of the center console where the USB data port is located.

I can see how modern cell phones fit the slot - but everyone seems to use those dash mounts for hands-free operation, don't they?
